Hey Fellow Mommas to be in NOVA. It’s a wild time to be pregnant and wanted to say good news is we aren’t alone even though this time can feel isolating. Was honored to have this published by Her View From Home a letter to my baby to be and thought it maybe the reminder you could use too.
Happy National nurses week to all the nurses out there who are risking your own safety to take care of all of us during this incredible difficult time. A special shout-out to the NICU nurses at The birthing inn at Inova Loudoun for keeping an extra special eye on Baby Kameryn in April for us. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! You all are amazing and we cannot thank you enough.
Happy Valentine’s Day to all of the wonderful staff at The Birthing Inn! We are so grateful and are forever indebted to all the wonderful NICU nurses, doctors and TBI staff who have shown/ continue to show our girls and us so much love during their stay.

#FridayFaces ~ Today’s Healthcare Hero is Jessica, RN BSN. She’s been a nurse for 18 years and has worked at Inova Loudoun Hospital for the last 13 years. She started as a nursery/postpartum nurse then transitioned into a Neonatal Resuscitation Nurse (NRN) 2 years ago. She attends all of our high risk deliveries. Being one of the first people to meet your baby and see that bond between baby and parents is her favorite part of the job. She said, her job never gets old and it’s so fun celebrating every birthday party.

Another perk about her job is she’s always surrounded by friends who have now become family. She thinks that is what keeps her going during these hard times.

Fun facts: Jessica’s two girls, both born in The Birthing Inn, keep her busy. Huge Nats fans, she and her family were able to go to a World Series game last year. #InovaHeroes

We hope to see all of our #NICUgrads at our Drive-By NICU Reunion Parade this Saturday, Oct 31st!

#FridayFaces ~ Today’s healthcare hero is Bokki, an amazing Clinical Technician II in our new Birthing Inn. She’s been a clinical technician for 17 years, 15 of those on the Medical Surgical Unit. She says the Postpartum Unit is a very special place to work since you get to be part of one of the most memorable days of a family's life. She feels lucky to have amazing coworkers who support her, are down-to-earth and funny!

Fun Fact: In Korea, Bokki and her childhood friends used to travel somewhere new at least once a year. The most impressive place was a place called Mt. Seorak, the view was incredible from the top. She still remembers the vast array of mountains with transparent icicles glazing all the trees in sight; it remains a clear picture in her mind even today.

She relaxes by watching TV, jogging, yoga and listening to music. #InovaHeroes

#FridayFaces ~ Today’s healthcare hero is Penny, RN-NIC, MSN, one of our incredible NICU nurses! She has 38 years of NICU experience in a variety of roles and loves working with preemies and their families. She enjoys getting pictures and updates after the babies have been home for a while.

Fun Facts: Penny is a self-proclaimed homebody, so staying at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 has been a blessing. Her two dogs, two cats and a husband that works from home keep her company and entertained. She is a gardener and an avid reader.

She also loves to meditate when it all seems overwhelming. “It doesn’t seem as overwhelming once a deep breath can be taken in and released.”

"I am the mother of baby Angel Eyeram Asamoah who was born still on March 9, 2020.

Losing a child is one of the most difficult and devastating things that can happen to any parent. It is not the norm - a child should bury their parents, not the other way around. So as devastating as it is, the care, support and love shared with these grieving families makes a lifetime impression.

I was blessed to receive an outstanding care from the team at Inova Loudoun Hospital, starting with nurse navigator Marie Tolliver - she was exceptional! She went above and beyond. Because of her and also praying for God to show me the purpose behind my loss, l felt led to open a ministry to help grieving mothers who experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or medically necessary abortion. Rai of Hope Ministry provides emotional support, master life coaching services, and gift baskets for these mothers.

My experience at Inova Loudon Hospital was nothing but wonderful given the circumstances, especially during this pandemic. I want to personally thank them all for the love, care and support they provide to grieving families. The TLC makes a big difference and the pain much less painful.

Hosting this annual memorial event for our babies is just extraordinary... My heart is full just knowing someone else cares and remembers my baby.

You are all just simply wonderful - may God bless you. Thank you so much for all you do." - Mai Zamba

"We lost our son, Cameron, 15 years ago, on October 14, 2005.

Even after 15 years, not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. I say his name in our prayers at night when I put our youngest son to bed. Sometimes something may come up throughout the day that reminds me of him. Sometimes it makes me smile, and other times it makes me sad. I feel like it is ok to be reminded of him and to think of him, as I will never forget that he is a part our lives. Time has helped heal some of the pain of losing our son, but we will always remember him and he will always be a part of me and a part of our family.

One thing that has helped me with my healing process is that when we lost Cameron, we had many family and friends that reached out and wanted to support us. They all wanted to do something to help. Honestly, we were in shock and really didn’t know what to do at that moment in time, so we asked them to make donations in Cameron’s name. We had such a wonderful outpouring of love and support that we decided to take all of the donations and start 'The Cameron Fund.'

Together, with Inova Loudoun Hospital, we have been able to provide various things to help support women who have had a loss at The Birthing Inn. We created the Cameron bracelet to give to women that lose a baby to give them hope and help with their healing process. We have taken toys and books to Cameron‘s corner in the lobby of The Birthing Inn so that children who were waiting would have something to pass the time and to give them a little bit of joy. Giving a little something that might help others heal has helped me with my healing through the years. I hope that it has helped many women and families as well.

I want to say to each of you that have had a loss, I am truly sorry. Take time for yourself and take time to heal.

Today, as you walk in remembrance of your baby or in support of a friend or loved one, I hope that it gives you hope and brings you one step closer to healing.

'Those we have held in our arms for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever.'" - Cindy Amos

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) this week celebrates all the nurses that serve as educators, coaches, and advocates for their patients to ensure a healthy pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum experience. Please join us in honoring our dedicated health care professionals this week and beyond by sending a virtual hug 🤗 to a special perinatal nurse you remember at Inova.

#FridayFaces ~ Sandy, BSN, RNC-MNN, is today’s healthcare hero. She worked at the Birthing Inn for 12 years and left to pursue an opportunity in a different area of nursing. After being away from Inova for 5 years she wanted to return to mother/baby nursing. She finds it rewarding helping the new moms navigate their way into motherhood. The most exciting part is that every situation is different and unique, whether it’s a mom’s first or fourth child.

Sandy says she works with, “an amazing group of competent, compassionate, and caring coworkers, dedicated to our unit. It was also exciting to be a part of the move to our beautiful new unit in the North Tower. We are more like family and close friends supporting each other through the thick and thin, especially with the challenges we all face today.”

In these challenges times she has been attempting small home projects thanks to the experts on YouTube. She likes to relax by biking, running, kayaking and listening to local live music with family and friends.

Fun Fact: Sandy is from north of Pittsburgh and a Steelers fan. She loves spending time with her 2 sons, English Yellow Lab "Buddy" and relaxing in Ocean City. #inovaheros

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s walk will be a virtual event to ensure the health and well-being of our attendees, team members and community.

Walk a one mile course of your choice between Thursday, October 15 and Sunday, October 18, 2020. We will share your photos and stories on The Birthing Inn page during this timeframe.

If you’d like to share a photo or personal story, please email them to [email protected].

Other ways you can honor babies and bereaved families:

NICU Pods:
Our two NICU Pods were designed for infants who need constant observation. Each pod can accommodate up to four infants and is continuously staffed by two nurses. The wall height allows for family privacy and increased parental interaction, while maximizing space and access for medical care. NICU Pods do not allow for overnight parental accommodations.
