Did you know that impaired ankle mobility and strength could lead to many problems including impaired balance and walking ability, leading to increased fall risk, and circulation problems including venous stasis, which could lead to leg wounds?
If you have venous stasis, compression stockings are recommended to promote blood return to the heart. Here are some considerations and advice on how to place compression stockings on:
1. Prepare the Stockings: Turn the stocking inside out up to the heel pocket. This makes it easier to slide over your foot.
2. Timing: Put them on first thing in the morning when swelling is minimal, before it worsens, and wear them throughout the day. Sit on a chair or bed for stability.
3. Moisturize : Apply a light layer of lotion to your legs if your skin is dry, but avoid the feet to prevent slipping.
4. Insert Foot: Place your toes into the foot portion, ensuring the heel pocket aligns with your heel. Gently pull the stocking over your foot.
5. Slide Up Leg: Gradually work the stocking up your leg, pulling it up in small sections. Avoid bunching or twisting. For knee-high stockings, pull up to just below the knee; for thigh-high, continue to the upper thigh.
6. Smooth Out Wrinkles: Once in place, smooth out any wrinkles or folds to ensure even compression. The stocking should fit snugly but not painfully tight.
7. Use Aids if Needed:
• Gloves: Wear rubber or textured gloves for better grip.
• Donning Devices: Use a stocking donner (a metal or plastic frame) to hold the stocking open while you slide your foot in.
• Talcum Powder: Lightly dust your foot with talcum powder to reduce friction.
8. Check Fit: Ensure the stocking isn’t too tight at the top band, which could restrict circulation. The heel and toe should be properly positioned.
