The 8 most COMMON root causes of a sluggish liver:

1️⃣ Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
Fat buildup in liver cells linked to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and abnormal lipid metabolism.

2️⃣ Alcohol-Related Liver Disease
Chronic alcohol intake causes inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis over time.

3️⃣ Hepatitis
Viral infections (A, B, C) can inflame and damage liver cells, especially when chronic.

4️⃣ Medication & Toxin Exposure
Medications, chemicals, and environmental toxins can overwhelm the liver’s detox pathways.

5️⃣ Insulin Resistance & Metabolic Syndrome
Disrupted glucose and fat metabolism directly contributes to fatty liver and impaired function.

6️⃣ Genetic Factors
Certain genetic variants affect how fats, hormones, and toxins are processed by the liver.

7️⃣ Autoimmune Liver Diseases
The immune system mistakenly attacks liver tissue or bile ducts, causing inflammation and damage.

8️⃣ Poor Diet & Nutrition
High sugar, processed foods, and unhealthy fats — plus nutrient deficiencies — strain liver function.

In functional medicine, we focus on identifying and addressing the root cause, not just managing symptoms.

I’ve spent over 20 years in the health and wellness field, with the last 12 devoted to functional nutrition — and one truth rises above everything else: the body is not a collection of separate systems.

Your gut, hormones, metabolic pathways, detox capacity, blood sugar regulation, and genetic expression are in constant dialogue. When one area is ignored, the entire system compensates — often in ways that create new symptoms instead of healing the root cause.

This is why so many women come to me after years of doing “all the right things.” They have followed meal plans, taken supplements, tried medications, pushed harder in the gym — yet still feel inflamed, exhausted, frustrated with their weight, or stuck in survival mode.

What I do is different. I do not chase symptoms. I decode patterns.

I look at how your digestion affects hormone clearance, how your genetics influence nutrient needs, how stress chemistry alters fat storage, and how inflammation quietly derails metabolism.

When we connect the dots, the body does not need to be forced to heal — it remembers how.

Maybe you’ve been dealing with gut issues, stubborn weight, hormone changes, perimenopause or low testosterone, or simply the frustration of feeling “off” no matter what you try. Maybe you’ve noticed that the energy and mobility you once had isn’t the same, and you’re worried about aging...

❓Always tired?
❓Suffer from digestive issues?
❓How about abdominal pain and discomfort?

These are ALL signs of a sluggish liver… 🐌

The liver is a vital organ that performs numerous functions essential for maintaining homeostasis in the body. When the liver is not functioning optimally, it can manifest various symptoms.

These are some of the most common signs / symptoms that your liver could use a little love! ⤵

👉 Jaundice (Icterus):
Impaired liver function can lead to a buildup of bilirubin, a yellow pigment produced during the breakdown of red blood cells. Normally, the liver processes and excretes bilirubin, but a sluggish liver may struggle with this process.

👉 Fatigue:
The liver plays a crucial role in energy metabolism by converting nutrients into usable forms. A sluggish liver may impact this process, leading to reduced energy production and fatigue.

👉 Abdominal Pain and Discomfort:
Enlargement of the liver or inflammation may result in pressure and discomfort in the abdominal region. Conditions like fatty liver disease or hepatitis can contribute to this symptom.

👉 Digestive Issues:
The liver produces bile, which aids in the digestion and absorption of fats. Impaired liver function can disrupt the production and secretion of bile, leading to digestive issues.

👉 Changes in Bowel Movements:
Liver dysfunction can affect the processing of substances that contribute to bowel regularity. Changes in bile production may influence stool consistency and bowel habits.

👉 Weight Gain:
A sluggish liver can contribute to metabolic imbalances, insulin resistance, and the accumulation of abdominal fat, leading to weight gain.

👉 Fluid Retention (Edema):
Impaired liver function may lead to decreased production of albumin, a protein that helps maintain fluid balance. This can result in fluid retention and swelling in the extremities.

If any of these symptoms sound familiar to you, then feel free to schedule a 1:1 discovery call with me. I’m here to help! 💗

If workouts leave you wiped out instead of feeling strong and refreshed, you’re not doing anything wrong. Your body may just be running on empty.

Things like constant fatigue, poor sleep, or sugar cravings after exercise aren’t weaknesses—they’re signals your system needs support. And the answer isn’t always cutting calories or upping cardio.

In Functional Medicine, we dig deeper to understand why this is happening. Are your adrenals overworked? Are your cortisol levels imbalanced? Are you eating in sync with your hormones and recovery needs?

If your workouts are making you feel worse, let’s find out why.

💛 Book a free 20-minute session so we can create a plan that supports your body—not burns it out.

If you’ve been feeling constantly on edge, exhausted, or like you’re bracing for something — even when life is “fine” — your nervous system may be stuck in survival mode.
Chronic stress flips your body’s internal alarm switch and leaves it blaring even when there’s no real danger. Over time, that state of alert becomes your new normal — draining your energy, disrupting hormones, and making it harder to feel calm or focused.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
Through a root-cause, functional nutrition & lifestyle approach, we can uncover what’s keeping your stress response stuck and start guiding your body back into balance.
✨ I’ve created a Free Functional Nutrition & Lifestyle Self-Assessment to help you identify what your body is really asking for.
Comment “RESET” and I’ll send it to you privately.

❌No, you don’t have to just “live with it.”
❌Chronic inflammation isn’t your destiny, it’s a signal.

🙄Most people are told their symptoms are part of aging, genetics, stress, or “just how your body is.”

But inflammation isn’t random.🔥

It usually comes from patterns that are modifiable once you identify what’s driving them.

Common root drivers I see all the time 👇
🔗 blood sugar swings
🔗 hidden food reactions
🔗 gut permeability
🔗 chronic infections
🔗 high toxic load
🔗 nutrient deficiencies
🔗 poor recovery and chronic stress
🔗 circadian rhythm disruption
🔗 hormonal shifts

When these areas stay unaddressed, inflammation becomes a long-term pattern instead of a temporary response.

The good news is that chronic inflammation is one of the most reversible things we work with in functional medicine.

When you target the root drivers, symptoms that felt permanent often start shifting faster than expected.

🚩🚩🚩So if someone told you to “just manage it”… get a second opinion.

Your body isn’t broken. It’s responding to something.

And you don’t have to settle for feeling inflamed forever.🙅🏻‍♀️

If you’re done “managing” inflammation and want a real plan that targets the root drivers, book a discovery call and let’s map out your next steps. Link in bio
