Are you arming your body with the defense shield it needs to stay healthy? 💪

Fun fact ✨ I did my master’s thesis on phytonutrients, which means I read up on, conducted studies on, and talked a lot about antioxidants back in the day. ✨🩷

Antioxidants are non-nutritive compounds [AKA provide no nourishment/calories] produced by plants that neutralize free radicals (things that cause inflammation in the body).

Their function is to protect the plants, but when you ingest them, they protect YOU! 💪

Free radicals are those nasty, unstable molecules that are just looking to damage your cells.

Having high levels of circulating antioxidants can help keep free radicals under control and reduce the risk of certain diseases, decrease inflammation, & positively impacting your gut microbiome!

Take away the damaging force of free radicals by consuming a bounty of colorful plants.

Each color 🌈 represents a different family of antioxidants, that is why there is the old saying, “EAT THE RAINBOW.”

Aim to fill your grocery cart with colorful produce & aim to make your plate as colorful as possible.

Let me be clear when I say that there is absolutely a time and a place for a low FODMAP diet. There is a lot of research backing up how effective a low FODMAP diet can be for people struggling with IBS.

BUT there is also a lot of research to show the negatives for being on a low FODMAP diet for an extended period of time and what it does to our good gut bacteria (decreases it).

At LexStart Nutrition we might use this elimination style diet as a tool, but we are also looking at the bigger picture to WHY you are having digestive issues in the first place. Many times if we fix the root, the symptoms resolve and we can successfully add back most, if not all high FODMAP foods.

Protein is needed for cell & tissue structure, muscle mass, energy, blood sugar regulation, hormone and metabolic support, & satiety.

The literature even shows us that dietary protein can also strongly impacts our intestinal microbiota composition (aka gut health). It is said that protein can count towards 20% of the microbial variation.

BUT understanding your specific protein quantity is important, as too much protein can have negative effects on the large intestine.

Aiming to include both animal and plant protein in your diet will further increase your good gut bacteria and help build up your gut lining!

Who likes to save money? 🙋🏼‍♀️

First, let me say that there could be MANY reasons you might be feeling bloated, and while I am always team “let’s get to the root cause” I also know that lifestyle and meal hygiene is not something to look over.

As you can see there are a lot of different forms of magnesium!

Each specific form has a unique function in how it may influence our overall health. It can range to mental health, gut health, neurological health, heart health, and blood sugar health!

Knowing your symptoms and learning about which form may benefit you is key! Low magnesium intake has been associated with several chronic diseases & studies show that about 80% of us fall short in meeting our daily needs of magnesium! Butttttt just throwing a random supplement into your daily routine without knowing how it may benefit you…well…that might not be beneficial at all!

✨Example: adding magnesium citrate to help improve your stress or sleep probably is not going to be as beneficial && you might notice an increase in your bathroom habits 💩VS adding in magnesium malate to help with constipation is probably not going to provide as much relief as magnesium citrate or oxide would!

So what should you do?

✅ Aim to be intentional with increasing foods higher in magnesium (see previous post)
✅ Listen to your body to assess what symptoms you might be dealing with
✅ Use this post as a cheat sheet in discovering which form of magnesium might be best for you

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist my goal at LexStart Nutrition, LLC is to help you get well and find relief with whatever symptoms or conditions that are holding you back from enjoying your life to the fullest! My philosophy involves educating and helping you learn how to treat real, whole food as part of your every day eating patterns. I believe in working with you as an individual towards realistic goals that will be sustainable for you and your lifestyle, no matter where you are at on your journey. I do not believe that one diet works for everyone, as we are all unique individuals who all have very different needs. And that is beautiful!
