Seeing that statistic shouldn’t feel normal, but for many families, it does…

…because knowing water is dangerous and knowing how to actually prevent a drowning are two VERY different things.

- Constant supervision fatigue
- Children who wander quickly and unexpectedly
A strong attraction to water
- Safety plans that don’t account for sensory or behavioral needs
- Traditional “rules” that don’t always stick

And when something feels off around water, families often blame themselves for not doing enough…

But here’s the truth:
It’s not a lack of care, it’s a lack of the right safety strategies.

At Swim Angelfish, we see this every day.
Families doing everything they can…but without tools designed for how their child actually learns, moves, and responds.

That’s why we created our Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit. Because water safety isn’t one-size-fits-all.

And it shouldn’t rely on luck.

It should be layered, practiced, and built around the individual.

✔ Ritual and routine…
Creating predictable safety habits like “I see water and I ask” to reduce impulsive entry

✔ Monitor and intervene…
Understanding supervision, proximity, and when to step in before a situation escalates

✔ Rescue equipment…
Introducing tools like rescue tubes before an emergency so they’re familiar, not frightening

✔ Adaptive swim training / learning to swim…
Building real, functional water skills that account for sensory, motor, and behavioral needs

Because drowning prevention isn’t just about teaching swimming…

It’s about creating layers of protection that work together.

When families have the right tools, they gain:
✨ Clear, actionable safety steps
✨ More confidence in, near and around water
✨ Strategies that actually match their child’s needs
✨ Peace of mind that they’re incorporating another added layer of safety (because there can never be ENOUGH)

You don’t have to figure this out alone.

You just need the right strategies, in the right order.

❕ Behind everything we do is one mission: lowering drowning risk. That means evolving, collaborating, and expanding our impact…

We’re proud to partner with organizations like Stop Drowning Now to combine education, awareness, and adaptive strategies, so more families have access to life-saving information that actually works.

“…but I just saw them.”
A tragic sentence we hear over and over 💔

Drowning doesn’t look like you think...no thrashing, no screaming.
It’s fast. It’s silent. And it happens when you think nothing is happening.

77% of children who drowned were seen five minutes or less before being missed and subsequently found in the pool.

Layers of protection, like a pool safety fence, exist for the moments when supervision isn’t enough.

Introducing toddlers to swimming at an early age is life saving. Studies suggest children who start before age 4 are up to 88% less likely to experience drowning incidents later in life. Safety is just one of many benefits.

Swimming also offers remarkable cognitive advantages. Unlike most play activities, water movement activates both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. This bilateral stimulation supports coordination, balance, and early neural wiring for complex motor skills.

Parents may notice improved focus, sensory integration, and body awareness as toddlers practice swimming. The repetitive movements and resistance of water provide a unique environment for nervous system development that land based activities rarely offer.

The takeaway is clear: early swimming is more than a safety skill. It quietly strengthens your toddler’s nervous system, enhances brain communication, and lays a foundation for future motor, cognitive, and emotional growth.

Some friendships are born from joy… and some are born from the deepest understanding.

Standing together as moms who know, who carry the unthinkable loss or the constant fear, turns advocacy into love in action. Pool fences aren’t just barriers; they’re promises we make to each other’s children.

In this space, we grieve, we protect, we educate, and we show up because no mom should walk this road alone, and no child’s life is worth the risk of silence.

Drowning prevention isn’t one thing, it’s EVERYTHING!

When you really think about it, this makes so much sense. Any of the flotation devices that are placing a child in the vertical position with their legs dangling down are creating muscle memory and body familiarity in the water. These children are not aware of their own buoyancy in the water and are not used to having to do anything to obtain their air supply. They are not equipped with the skills to obtain a floating (horizontal) position in the water.

This wouldn't be such a risky practice if we knew that kids would never have access to water without them, but we know that's not true. Lapses in supervision are inevitable. We know that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4 and we need to change our perception of water safety to include non swim times. Self rescue swim skills are one layer to prevent a drowning fatality or serious injury. The more layers you can have in place, the better. Kids are quick, impulsive and curious. These characteristics are funny when they sneak into the markers and draw on themselves, or unroll toilet paper all over the house. These characteristics when water is near, is dangerous.

Let's do better in 2023 and reduce the number of childhood drownings. 92 children have been taken from their families in 2022 in Florida alone and an estimated 644 other children were treated for non fatal submersion injuries*. If we can change our approach to this epidemic, we can save lives. We can empower more children to have life saving skills.

*For every 1 fatal drowning, there is another 7 children treated for a non fatal submersion injury. -CDC, 2022
