It's that time again. Two trays of Candy onions and two trays of Winter Density lettuce seeded. Amazing the food these tiny seeds will provide. The lettuce is more cool amd warm hardy, so they should produce for a while.
In the meantime, I already got some turnips from the high tunnels and the first egg from the girls. That egg is worth at least .50 cents at today's store prices, lol. Looking forward to spring.

More than ever, it is vital that we grow food and eat local. Now is the time to plant seeds and grow a garden this year. We don't know where we will be later this year. So grow, grow, grow.

The United States experiences extreme and dangerous weather, and this winter, parts of the U.S. face a particularly severe threat. Forecasts are showing a soon-to-peak El Niño that could deliver drenching conditions to California and throughout the South. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has developed fact sheets on El Niño available at NOAA El Niño Impacts by region and the Winter Outlook is available at NOAA El Niño Winter Outlook. These predicted conditions come with an enhanced flood threat and an increase in tornado activity through the spring.
For the next several months, many areas in the United States are at an increased flood risk from El Niño as a direct result of drought and wildfires. Disasters don’t always occur when families are together in one place. Now is the time to put together a family communication plan and talk with your family about ways to contact each other during an emergency, and designate a safe meeting spot. You can also plan ahead by knowing official evacuation routes, and keeping important papers in a safe, waterproof place. Additional tips and resources on how to stay safe and prepare are available at www.ready.gov.
More information is available about El Niño at www.fema.gov/el-Niño. The tab labeled Additional Resources include links to resources from various federal agencies including NOAA, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of the Interior, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

FEMA Safe Rooms

Having a FEMA safe room or International Code Council 500 storm shelter in your home or small business can help provide near-absolute protection for your family or employees during extreme weather events such as tornadoes and hurricanes, but safe rooms must be built correctly to ensure occupants are protected from injury or death.

In the FEMA publication, “Taking Shelter from the Storm: Building a Safe Room for Your Home or Small Business,” FEMA provides specifications on how to properly design and build a safe room. These guidelines offered in this publication must be met to be considered a FEMA safe room. This document also outlines how to modify a home or business to add a safe room to an existing space.

If you have questions about building a safe room, contact the FEMA Safe Room Helpline at saferoom@fema.dhs.gov. You can also check out this list of Frequently Asked Questions.

In addition to having a safe room, there are other ways to prepare for disasters. America’s PrepareAthon! offers valuable information about severe weather events that may impact your community this season, including tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and floods.
