This past weekend I assisted at another Brainspotting training, the first in my hometown. I really enjoyed being in the room as people from across the Midwest learned the theory and practice of this healing modality. Tears and laughter as well as deep insights came from our three days together. Thanks to Selah Counseling for hosting us.

Shame isn’t just a feeling—it’s an embodied experience that wires into the nervous system early in life. For those with developmental trauma, shame often becomes the lens through which the self is seen.

It says:
“I am bad,” not “I did something bad.”

In Brainspotting, we don’t try to talk shame away. We locate it in the body, find the spots in the visual field that hold its charge, and allow the nervous system to process what words alone cannot touch.

As the shame releases, clients rediscover a deeper truth:
I am worthy. I am whole. I am not the trauma I lived through.

When summer heat turns up, so does 🔥 Pitta—the fiery dosha that governs heat, digestion, and transformation. While a little fire gives us drive and focus, too much can leave us feeling irritable, overheated, or just plain burnt out.

Yoga’s sister science, Ayurveda, invites us to live in rhythm with the seasons—and summer calls for soothing, cooling, and slowing down. Here are a few simple ways to stay balanced:

🥥 Favor cooling foods like watermelon, cucumber, leafy greens, and coconut
🌺 Sip room temp or cool water with cucumber and mint or rose—skip the iced drinks if you can
🐢 Move at a gentler pace—swap intense workouts for a walk or yin yoga
🌿 Spend time in nature, especially near water or under trees

You don’t have to push through the heat. Let summer be a season of ease

The wisdom of the body….

Our thinking brain (the cortex) is great at avoidance, rationalizing, and analyzing. But the subcortical brain (the deeper, more primitive parts) stores experiences in sensation, posture, reflex, and feeling.

Brainspotting aims to access these deeper layers by locating spots in the visual field connected to subcortical processing.

So if you find yourself crying during stillness, shaking during silence, or suddenly exhausted after a session…
It’s not sabotage.
It’s your nervous system finally exhaling.

A Private Studio - Doing Things A Little Differently

Because I believe strongly that yoga is for every body and because I believe a smaller student to teacher ratio is best so I can truly know my students and they can know me, I offer you a different model of yoga classes. In its early days yoga was offered teacher to student in the teacher’s home and I have found this model to foster so much comfort and connection in my student community. Sure, I still teach in studios, businesses and churches but if you are seeking a regular practice with one of the amazing communities of women who gather with me here, please reach out via message and I’ll do my best to work you in to an ongoing class or upcoming workshop. Maybe your preference is for private yoga sessions for you or you and a small group, that is available also. I’m grateful for your interest.
