Sheridan School District high school students interested in healthcare careers got a chance to watch a knee surgery in The Orthopaedic & Spine Hospital at UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences today.

The students, accompanied by athletic trainer Tiffany Evans, watched from the observation suite while sports medicine surgeon Dr. Larry O’Malley performed a MACI (or matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte implantation) procedure and even answered questions while he worked. The technique uses the body’s own cells (which are sent to a lab where new cells are grown on a membrane scaffold), to repair cartilage defects in the knee.
