One of the foundations of my teaching is that at the beginning of my classes I set an intention for the practice. (Thank you Leslie Pearlman for being my mentor in this practice!) I have decided to start sharing these here occasionally. Please let me know if you find this inspiring or helpful. Should I do these as a video? Or is writing them out better? Or would you like both?
Take a seat and lengthen your spine. Lower your shoulders and feel your feet on the floor. Breathe deep as I set the intention for tonight's class.
The Fall Equinox is here. This is a time that always brings up mixed feelings for me. I love the fall in Michigan. It's amazing weather and we have such beautiful fall colors. But part of me struggles to appreciate the fall because I get all in my head feeling like I'm going to miss summer, especially the long hours of sunshine, the flowers, the outdoor activities. And whenever I start ruminating about this, next thing I know I'm dreading the winter, with the darkness, the drab colors and the cold. When this line of thinking begins, I am at risk of missing the beauty of fall. I have to really work to stay mindful and to enjoy the season while it's here. So today, when I walked to the curb to bring in my garbage can, I stopped to notice the wind blowing a bunch of brown and orange leaves down and I saw my Costco mums smiling on my front porch, with Maisey peering out the front door. I breathed deep, felt my feet on my driveway, and savored the moment.
So our intention for today's practice is this, can we find the balance point where we settle into this moment, where we aren't craving what is behind us, or reaching for what is in front of us, but instead breathe deep, feel our feet on the ground, and see what there is to notice right this very second.
Happy Fall Equinox!
