🌟 Highlighting Public Health Innovation During National Public Health Week 🌟

The HEART Initiative recently traveled to Minneapolis for the American Public Health Association's Annual Meeting, where Dr. Aaron Hunt and student intern Aleja Longoria from the B.S. in Health Education Program presented their innovative Overdose Response Training.

With the rise of fentanyl contamination in illicit substances, overdose risks are increasing—especially for high-risk occupational groups such as blue-collar and service industry workers. Construction workers face the highest risk of all occupational groups.

The HEART Initiative’s training empowers participants to:
✅ Recognize signs of an overdose
✅ Respond effectively using Narcan®, a nasal spray that can reverse opioid overdoses
✅ Access free overdose prevention training, available in-person or online
✅ Receive free Narcan® upon completing the training

During National Public Health Week, we’re highlighting the impactful work of the USU Public Health Program. This includes a successful Hispanic Health Fair hosted by Aaron Hunt, PhD, MPH, the USU Extension Health & Wellness Specialist. 🎉

Held in alignment with Hispanic Heritage Month, the event aimed to celebrate Hispanic culture and promote health and wellness, with a special focus on vaccine uptake to support healthier communities. 💪❤️

Tabitha Allred is one of our current students who is simultaneously working as a Health Educator for Summit County Utah!

"I love working at the Summit County Health Department because I get to work with amazing community partners! In 2023, Mayor Mark Marsh and I were awarded a Healthy Utah Community designation from Get Healthy Utah because of Coalville City's efforts and lasting commitment to promote the health, safety, and well-being of residents and visitors."

Kendall Bell, a new graduate student in our MPH program, is helping raise awareness about the vital role food pantries play in our communities.

"Poor nutrition is a leading cause of illness in the United States, about 600,000 people nationwide die each year from diet-related diseases. The Primary Children's food pantry aims to address food insecurity and hunger, which can put children's overall health at risk, and connect patients to additional community food resources that can provide more long-term support."

This spotlight is part of our celebration of National Public Health Week, highlighting the work being done to build healthier communities.
