Tonight I had the opportunity to speak to a TBI support group in Sugarhouse. It went well, and I’ll be doing it again for another group next month!

I just did a presentation at Utah State University about Neurologic Music Therapy! It was for the music therapy practicum class at USU. Two years ago, I was a student in that very same class, completing my final semester. A year ago this month, I completed the NMT training. And now I’m back as a music therapist, imparting some of my knowledge to the current students. It’s amazing how life comes full circle, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. ☺️ I look forward to doing more presentations in the future.

This is a great example of how neurologic music therapy can help people after a stroke! It helped this young man learn how to walk again and regain use of the left side of his body.

My paddle drums have arrived! 🤩 I’m so excited to have these because they will be extremely useful! Because these drums can be easily arranged into any position, they can be used for working on:
-gross motor control
-sustained attention
-visual tracking
among other things! I’m positive that these drums will get a lot of use here at Rhythmic Recovery. ☺️

As a music therapist, musical instruments are the primary tools I use for my work. I’ve gathered a few things over the years, but I will need to purchase many more instruments to be used in my private practice. I made my first instrument purchase for Rhythmic Recovery today: a couple of paddle drums. I’m excited for them to arrive, because they will be EXTREMELY useful!

Did you know that when you are actively engaged in music, it changes your brain? This includes playing instruments, moving to music, singing, and writing songs. You can strengthen neural pathways in your brain for movement, speech, and other skills by engaging in music. Music therapists create active music-making interventions to help people progress towards their goals!

I thought I would start this page with an introductory post. My name is Carly Hoffman, and I am a board-certified music therapist living in Utah. I am starting my private practice Rhythmic Recovery because I believe that rehabilitative music therapy should be more available to people living in Utah. I believe that people who have suffered injuries, strokes, and disorders should have access to music therapy services that will help them regain function and obtain a higher quality of life. That is my mission and my purpose, and I am excited to get started!
