What a privilege, what a trip, and what a truly amazing group of individuals to have gotten to spend the last couple of days with in Pikeville, Ky! We were blessed with so many amazing speakers and opportunities from getting to tour Pikeville Universites state of the art Optometry school, to learning the history of Pikeville and the work done with the cut through that helped build their community, and to the AVA center that now holds a special place in my heart after learning the story behind it from the CEO himself and the personal investment he has to the research there. I can’t wait to see what this group of future leaders can do for Appalachia!

Cierra has been working in the field of psychology and social health since 2019. After obtaining her Bachelors's in Chemical and Substance Abuse Counseling she has continued to work towards her Masters in Clinical Psychology, Masters in General Psychology, and Master's in Chemical and Substance Abuse Counseling. Cierra has worked for notable organizations such as SSWAA the School Social Workers of America and Cumberland River Behavioral Health where she is currently serving adolescents and families by providing therapeutic support and interventions. She currently provides psychoeducation classes free to the parents and teachers within the community she services as well as being an activist against the stigma around the mental health field.

October is ADHD Awareness Month! According to the latest CDC data, ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral health disorder among children. ADHD can be treated with evidence-based interventions for children and teens such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), medication, and positive reinforcement. Those are just to name a few. Thankfully, in recent years new information and a bettter understanding of how ADHD targets everyone differently has decreased the stigma around this disorder! My question for you all this month…who (celebrity or personally) do you know that has been successful with using there ADHD for good?

September 10th We observe World Su***de Prevention Day each year. It’s a growing problem and the numbers tell a shocking story. Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization (WHO). That’s about 800,000 people worldwide every year — although some estimates put that number closer to 1 million. Su***de is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 and for every su***de that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted su***des. What we know for sure is that there’s a lot to live for.

I couldn’t have been more amazing at the amount of community in Eastern Kentucky! I am so privileged to have been able to lend a hand and put boots on the ground with these families. Rebuilding will take time and both the mental and physical wounds will take time to heal, but these people really do show the true heart of Kentucky with perseverance and strength to carry on and help our neighbors.

Very honored to be a part of the first annual Appalachian Gathering for Recovery Solutions. This amazing opportunity joined professionals across the span of addiction recovery in a collaborative effort to open the discussion on what areas were impacted by substance use in the Appalachian area. This also allowed for board panels and discussion about how we could best serve our community.
