What is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented (somatic) therapy that encourages you to feel your body in the present moment (experience). The goal is to identify and address signals of survival instincts or interpersonal patterns that persist after a stressful event is over and are no longer helpful for coping with life.
It begins with:
Resourcing - Using internal and external resources to feel more grounded, safe, and supported. These can be anything that brings a sense of calm, strength, or comfort.
Titration - Titration is about carefully touching into the smallest “drop” of survival-based arousal, which increases stability, resilience and organization and prevents retraumatization.
Pendulation - The innate power of rhythm. While trauma is about being frozen or stuck, pendulation is about the innate organismic rhythm of contraction and expansion. It is, in other words, about getting unstuck by knowing (sensing from the inside), perhaps for the first time, that no matter how horrible one is feeling, those feelings can and will change.
