A fellow member of ACNA, Marissa Fratoni, said it best with a beautiful tribute to this amazing pioneer. Although I did not have the opportunity to know this man personally, I enjoyed the privilege of hearing him speak at conferences. RIP, Dr. Mechoulam! A very sad day for the cannabis community…

Without Dr. Raphael Mechoulam's work and contribution to this field of science, we would not be where we are today in terms of our understanding and application of the Cannabis sativa plant, and the Endocannabinoid System. He was a revolutionary, a force that brought an understanding of the healing capability of this plant to the world. The world is a little darker as Dr. Mechoulam made his final shift out of this realm yesterday.

Rest in eternal peace Dr. Mechoulam. Thank you for everything you've contributed and for inspiring healing and change in a world that truly needs it.

I’ve had quite a few of my older clientele struggling to make sense of strains. I found an article on Leafly that does a good job of clarifying this. Although the cannabinoids vary in different strains, their molecular structure remains the same…CBD is CBD, THC is THC, etc…now, terpenes are what is going to drive your experience. The varying ratios of terpenes, in addition to those cannabinoids, are going to influence whatever experience and medicinal benefits that are reaped from a particular product. And then there’s the whole Endocannabinoid system to consider but let’s just slow that roll…a conversation for another time perhaps! Hope this helps others that are struggling with these terms.

A couple of years ago when I started my consulting business, I was gifted an awesome mug from my boss, who I am privileged enough to call my friend, that said Cannaboss. It was my very favorite mug and I enjoyed my coffee out of it every morning (and some late afternoons.) Well, that mug arrived at an early demise on my kitchen floor after my wonderful housekeeper attempted to relocate it while wiping the kitchen countertop. I tried to maintain a calm demeanor as I knew it was an accident and I didn’t want her to feel bad. But inside, I strangely felt as shattered as that damn mug. Obviously I developed an unhealthy attachment to it😂
As some of you may know, I have two incredibly amazing and thoughtful sons. My older son, who just started his own engraving business, surprised me last night with this new version of my favorite mug. I absolutely love it and have already started developing a relationship with it🤣
His engraving business, Premier Weapon Innovations, is primarily for firearm engraving but clearly his talents will overflow into many different types of engraving projects. A couple of amazing guest speakers at my Empowering Independent Healthcare Through Cannabis class today at the OLLI program for senior learners at Cal State Long Beach.
Shelly McKay is a cofounder and educator at Kannabis Works, a fully licensed dispensary in Santa Ana. A wealth of knowledge regarding quality medicinal products as well as the science behind cannabinoid medicine. She is also a volunteer for NORML (National Organization for Reform of Ma*****na Laws) and a patient advocate.
Cory Getz is a cannabis patient and advocate. He experienced a pontine brain stem stroke which resulted in the inability to use the entire right side of his body. He shared his journey of a full recovery with physical therapy and CBD. You can see more of his story on YouTube at Cory, the CBD surfer. Truly inspiring!

While you’ve been doing your thing, there has been some important movement on the cannabis forefront. Much left to do, but it’s a start!! I appreciate those that have taken the time to write letters of support to local, state, and federal government. Here’s the latest scoop from Cal NORML…

SACRAMENTO, September 18 – Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that he has signed several measures to strengthen California’s cannabis laws, expand the legal cannabis market and redress the harms of cannabis prohibition.
Among the bills signed were AB 2188 by Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Hayward), a Cal NORML-sponsored bill that protects Californians from employment discrimination based on their use of cannabis off-the-clock and away from the workplace.
The Governor also signed:
• AB 1706 by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) ensures that Californians with old cannabis-related convictions will finally have those convictions sealed. This and AB 2188 were signed to "further unwind California’s failed history of cannabis prohibition," a press release from the Governor's office said.
• SB 1186 by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) preempts local bans on medicinal cannabis delivery, expanding patients’ access to legal, regulated cannabis products. Cal NORML testified in favor of the bill at its hearings.
• SB 1326 by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced), which creates a process for California to enter into agreements with other states to allow cannabis transactions with entities outside California.
• AB 1885 by Assemblymember Ash Kalra (D-San Jose) to allow veterinarians to recommend cannabis for pets.
• AB 2210 by Assemblymember Bill Quirk (D-Hayward) to allow venues with liquor licenses to host cannabis events.
• AB 1894 by Assemblymember Luz Rivas (D-Arleta) – Integrated cannabis vaporizer: packaging, labeling, advertisement, and marketing.

I just wrapped up another 8 week semester with the OLLI program at Cal State Long Beach. Small group for the summer but I appreciate the more intimate setting as it helps build a more solid relationship with the participants. Here’s the scoop if you know any seniors (50+) that are interested in continuing their education…

There will be more than 90 class offerings for the Fall session to include in person, zoom, and 4-5 hyflex options that allow you the flexibility to attend in person or zoom depending on what you’re up to that particular day. They even have some off site classes and free events as well. An annual membership is $40 with classes costing $15 a piece. Campus parking is $15/day or $55/month if you’re coming to campus on a regular basis. Registration for fall begins at 0900 on Tuesday 9/6. This is a complicated read but well worth your time and attention if you or someone you love is affected by this disease process. I cannot tell you how many diabetic patients I have recovered after their surgical procedures who are oblivious to the damage they are causing within their body when they just “go ahead and indulge and then correct their blood sugar with more insulin.” Or rely too heavily on their oral diabetic pharmaceuticals to manage their disease instead of implementing quality of life impacting changes such as a healthy, plant based diet and exercise to acknowledge their role in managing their own disease process. I wrote a letter for the Action Network letter campaign: Support Employment Rights for Ma*****na Users in California.

Although ma*****na is legal for adults and medical patients to use in California, employers can still discriminate against Californians who use cannabis, even for off-the-job use and even if they have a doctor's recommendation to use it. AB 2188 (Quirk) would ban employers from denying workers' jobs or firing them based on drug tests for inactive metabolites of THC, which can be detected for days or weeks after use, and have no correlation with on-the-job impairment. It would still allow employers to maintain a safe, drug-free workplace by allowing performance testing or other technologies that do a better job of detecting recent ma*****na use. Please write to your Assemblymember and ask them to support this important human rights bill.
