Let's take a look at synthetic versus natural skin care:
Synthetic skincare means products incorporate laboratory and scientifically derived ingredients. It is important to remember that all things are chemicals, even water. Synthetic generally means that a naturally derived ingredient has been molecularly replicated within a lab. Synthetic beauty products require preservatives, such as parabens. Using preservatives allows for a longer shelf life. Preservatives typically make up a very small percentage of the overall product and the concentration of a chemical is what you need to pay attention to. At such low concentrations, these preservatives typically aren't harmful, but can accumulate in our body. Synthetic products contain toxins, such as silicones and synthetic fragrances, that have negative effects on our environment.
The term natural means different things to different people, however, generally it implies that the product was formulated with ingredients found in nature without a lab. However, there is no global standard. Natural products are formulated with ingredients found in nature, often from plants, such as botanical oils. However, just because it is plant material does not always mean it's good for the environment. Products that contain palm oil contribute to deforestation, decreasing biodiversity and displacing wildlife. Some natural products may not be created from ethically sourced ingredients. No preservatives, are used in natural beauty products. Selling a product in its dry form (like our powdered face masks), requires the addition of water, hydrosol, or another liquid before applying it, but prevents the use of preservatives. However, some natural products may have a shorter shelf life because no preservatives are used. Natural products have no drying sulfates, harsh parabens, or harmful fragrances that have negative impacts on the environment.
There is merit in both natural and synthetically created skincare and the line between the two is not black and white. Choose what is best for you and your skin and most importantly familiarize yourself with the ingredients and make conscious choices about your skincare products.
