What’s the difference between Swedish and Deep Tissue Massage?

Most massages incorporate elements of both. I believe the primary differences are Intention, Pressure, and Technique. In my experience:

Swedish massage is primarily intended to promote full body relaxation, improve circulation, and alleviate tension and stress. Strokes used are very calming to the nervous system and a great way to give your mind body and spirit a chance to reset. Pressure can be requested as light, medium, or firm. Techniques vary but are typically slow, rhythmic, and designed to encourage deep relaxation and reduce general aches and tension.

Deep Tissue Massage is intended to address specific pain or dysfunction in the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Posture, activity, age, trauma, genetics, and the daily demands we place upon our bodies can lead to chronic pain, holding patterns, and tissue restrictions. Deep Tissue uses slow, steady pressure and techniques such as friction, stretching, joint mobilization, and myofascial release or trigger point therapy to improve range of motion and relieve pain & tension in a specific area of the body.

A skilled therapist will use a variety of methods and adapt any session to your needs and comfort level. Massage should not be painful! Deep work can be very intense but should feel more like good pressure than pain. Massage therapy should NOT cause more harm than good. You can get real work done without feeling like you got elbow dropped. 💪
