Instead of saying:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Enjoy every moment” or “It gets easier”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why don’t people say:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“You’ll enjoy a lot of moments but having a newborn is super hard and sometimes it’s not fun”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the days of newborn life I used to cringe when people (especially random people) would say things like this to me.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s not that I wasn’t enjoying a lot of the moments. But, the truth is, enjoying every single one would have been impossible!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, if you felt this way or still do about parenthood in general I’m here to say:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s OK to feel completely overwhelmed⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s OK to miss your old life⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s OK to not feel like yourself⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s OK to cry about all of this⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Raising babies is HARD work. Of course, the rewards make it all worth it. But, don’t feel bad about feeling your feels whatever they may be!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What helps me get through?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reliable sleep habits and vanilla lattes!! 😴☕️💤⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Who else secretly thinks it’s kind of cute when their babe get’s upset and/or cranky?

Well it’s cute until it’s NOT cute and you start to feel helpless.

Do you know what the number one cause of upset and crankiness is? Drum roll….

OVERTIREDNESS

Of course babies get cranky for other reasons like hunger, a diaper change or teething. But those issues are pretty easily identifiable.

Despite overtiredness being the number one cause of upset it can be hard recognize sometimes before it gets a little out of control.

It’s a simple cycle:

Baby is pushed beyond his or her limits of awake time

Cortisol production starts

Baby is cued to stay awake

Upset + Fights Sleep

This cycle can lead to an onset of more cycles where baby needs extra help to fall asleep, shortened naps, night wakings, early mornings etc.

My number one remedy to overtiredness is following age appropriate wake windows! Swipe over for my quick reference guide to wake windows.

Sometime’s baby’s make it hard for us to see their tired signs. This can be especially true as they get older and don’t want to pause playing to take a nap or go to bed at night.

That’s where wake windows become your best friend in terms of PREVENTING overtiredness! Which is of course our number one goal when it comes to great sleep habits.

Are you working with wake windows or do you want to start trying them out? Let me hear success stories or questions about wake windows in the comments! 😴

Are you an exhausted mama?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you wish your little one would sleep better but you’re concerned about damaging connection with sleep training?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m here to tell you right now: when it comes to you, your baby and sleep there IS a middle ground!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you’ve read about sleep training or gentle sleep learning and you're totally confused by the mixed messages.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Maybe you’ve even tried to implement one or a few of the strategies you’ve read about and nothing seems to be working.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well, guess what? Every baby and family is different! And that’s why (unfortunately) a lot of “one size fits all” sleep approaches available in books and on the internet don’t end up working.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can assure you that it’s not your fault these approaches didn’t work. And the situation is not hopeless! There is a way to regain control of your days and nights while remaining totally supportive and connected to your child’s needs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s where I come in… Working one-on-one together I take stock of the BIG picture when it comes to sleep. Sleep is a complicated process hinging on many factors such as age, sleep environment, developmental milestones, daily habits and nutrition just to name a few!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My main goal with all my clients is to ensure a detailed understanding of your family’s daily life, your child and how it ALL plays a roll in your sleep story. This way, I can come up with a personalized plan that will set you up for maximum sleep SUCCESS!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The facts are clear: raising a baby is challenging. Raising one on little to no sleep just makes it THAT much harder.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's talk sleep sacks!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love love love sleep sacks for baby’s once a swaddle is no longer age appropriate. Why? Because a sleep sack is basically a wearable blanket for your baby! So, it’s a great transition from the swaddle because it provides a similar sense of security mimicking the womb but with all the mobility.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In terms of safety, loose blankets in the crib can be dangerous. So, a sleep sack is a safe way for a baby to stay under the covers all night long. That being said I only recommend sleeveless sleep sacks because they allow for maximum mobility in the crib AKA maximum safety.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sleep sacks come in many different materials and weights. You should keep in mind the temperature of the room when choosing the right sleep sack. Ideal sleep temperature is between 68-72F. So, during hot summer months a light sleep sack might be appropriate vs winter months when a heavier weight might work better.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An added bonus for sleep is that a sleep sack can help regulate body temperature overnight. Which can be super helpful to prevent unwanted wake ups.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, are sleep sacks necessary for good sleep? I truly feel it depends on the baby and the parent’s personal preference! I’ve known baby’s who certainly sleep very well without one. However, I always recommend at least trying one out, especially for young baby’s who previously loved a swaddle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Do you have a key phrase for sleep? It's the signature way you say goodnight to your little one! Such a little thing that can go along way for your baby! ⭐️😴⭐️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Time to go night night" is what I say every time I put my son down for sleep right before I leave his room. I remember my mom saying it to me and it has stuck with me to this day!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Hence, the beauty of the sleepy time key phrase! Using the same words to say goodnight every nap and bedtime builds familiarity, reliability and security!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It's a really simple way you can personalize the routine. Plus, you'll be creating a memory that will make an impression on your sweet baby for a lifetime!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, I want to hear all your cute key phrases for sleep! Drop a comment with yours below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Happy Saturday!! I’m hoping your weekend has a little fun in the mix. Speaking of which does anyone feel the double edged sword of being home more these days?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’re like me, all the extra time at home might mean your babe’s naps are super on point everyday. Which of course is great! But, what if you want to get out of the house for an extra long trip to the beach or a park?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Right now especially it’s so important to get out and switch up your everyday life when you can! With a little planning you can do it all with your babe by your side.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️If possible keep the first nap of the day at home, it’s usually the longest and best quality nap sleep of the day.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Car seat naps are your friend!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Plan at least one longer drive around the same time your baby would nap.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Newborns are so adaptable to sleep on the go so take full advantage!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Short car seat nap? Help baby reset by moving their next nap up by 20-30 mins and/or doing an earlier bedtime.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️Remember, if things get thrown off for one day it’s going to be OK!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⭐️If your extra long trip results in sleep interrupted for baby that night stick to your sleep strategy and offer soothing as needed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you do your research on dream feeds online you’ll find a huge mix of information and rules to follow!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So what is a dream feed?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Essentially, it’s an added feed that typically takes place 2 to 3 hours after the bedtime feeding. So, anywhere between 9-10:30pm just before your own bedtime.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The idea is that this added feed will fill baby up, allowing them to do a longer overnight stretch of about 6-7 hours. Bonus: It coincides with your bedtime and gives you a longer stretch of sleep as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All sounds pretty dreamy right? In some cases it is! I find it works best for babies 6 wks to 4 months. If it sounds appealing, I would give it a try for a solid week to see results.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The flip side of the coin is that a dream feed turns out to be an interruption to deep sleep.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example, a dream feed could cause too much stimulation and make it hard to go back to sleep. Or, baby might not wake up enough to take a full feeding. And of course, doing a dream feed doesn’t guarantee a longer stretch of sleep.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Another possibility is a dream feed creating a habitual wake up for older babies that might be capable of uninterrupted overnight sleep.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Personally, I never saw a reason to incorporate a dream feed into my own baby’s schedule. I worried that it would cause more confusion and/or interruptions rather than prolonging sleep.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course it can be a really helpful tool, especially for young babies. Just know that if it doesn’t work out for yours or your realizing it’s time to drop the dream feed that’s OK too.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The transition to 1 nap is one of the hardest sleep milestones for our little ones!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By the time baby might be ready to drop to 1 nap you are WELL familiar with their personality and tired signs. So, it might be tempting to shift to 1 nap as soon as 12 months rolls around.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While baby could be ready by 12 months it's usually a safer bet to wait until 14 months. There's one big reason why: Walking! Around 12 months baby is usually working on learning to walk or mastering the skill!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This type of major gross motor skill development can cause sleep interruptions. It's typical for baby to protest the second nap of the day while learning to walk but it doesn't necessarily mean it's time to loose the nap altogether!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before you decide to start shifting to 1 nap a day it's a good idea to wait 2-3 weeks while baby is mastering their new skill. During this time, if nap number 2 doesn't go well you can always move bedtime up to compensate!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let's chat about what's going on with your baby during months 𝟺 to 𝟪! This time in your little one's life is filled with many rapid changes...⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏽By 4 Months the stages of sleep change from 2 to 4 parts, ie 4 Month Sleep Regression⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏿Around 4 months baby is usually starting to show sings of rolling and needs to drop the swaddle⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶Sometime between 4 and 6 months rolling is mastered⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏼Between 6 to 7 months baby is working on sitting up unassisted ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏾Baby typically get's introduced to solid foods anywhere from 4 to 6 months⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏻Sometime between 6 and 8 months baby starts getting up on all fours and learns to crawl⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👶🏽And of course, teething! Which can start as early as 4 months (see my post from this morning about supportive teething)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All of this stuff is A LOT for baby to accomplish both physically and mentally! Inevitably these things can and will cause fussiness and/or interruptions to sleep. This is totally OKAY and totally normal.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These situations can all be handled with grace when you foster a strong sleep foundation for your little one. Why? Because a well rested baby can handle all of these changes better than an overtired one!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Managing getting there can be overwhelming but you don't have to do it alone! If you are struggling to create a balance in months 4-8 send me a DM 😴🌙😴⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The short answer to this question is... No!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I truly wish that solids were the answer to a full night of sleep for babies! But, the truth is sleep is far more complicated than just having a full belly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In fact, feeding too close to bedtime, overfeeding or starting solids before a baby is really ready can case disruptions to sleep rather than prolonging it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Of course calories are important for baby's to begin consolidating their sleep, especially at night! But, adding solids will not create the instant fix you might be looking for because calorie intake is just one piece of the sleep puzzle.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
-⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, keep in mind the big picture and approach your child's sleep with a holistic mindset. This looks like following age appropriate wake windows, following a consistent bedtime routine, a conducive sleep environment and independent sleep skills when old enough 🌙😴⭐️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
