"It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop."

Progress isn’t measured by speed; it’s measured by perseverance. Every small step you take is still a step forward, and that’s what matters most.

Keep going, even when it feels tough. Trust the journey, honor your pace, and know that you’re moving closer to your goals with every effort.

▪ What to Avoid When Helping Someone with Addiction

1. Don’t Enable the Addiction
Enabling occurs when your actions unintentionally support their substance use. For example, giving them money, making excuses for their behavior, or bailing them out of trouble can perpetuate the cycle of addiction.

2. Avoid Ultimatums
While it’s important to set boundaries, issuing harsh ultimatums can backfire. Instead, focus on open communication and encourage them to seek help willingly.

3. Don’t Neglect Your Own Well-Being
Supporting someone with an addiction can be emotionally taxing. Make sure to prioritize your mental health by seeking support through therapy or support groups for families, like Al-Anon.

There are many other things to consider when dealing with someone with an addiction. To learn more, head over to our website: lavalleyrecovery.com

- 1 is too many and 1,000 is not enough.
Due to its accuracy, the saying “One is too many, and a thousand is never enough” often goes around in recovery rooms. A person who does not suffer from the disease of addiction can go out with friends for a few drinks and have the ability to realize when enough is enough. For an addict or alcoholic, it is much different. Once an addict takes that first sip, first hit, or the first pill, it’s all over. The choice is now out of their hands, and the disease of addiction takes the wheel. An addict is genuinely unable to stop drinking or using once they have started.

For those looking to make a permanent change in their lives, the steps to take will look different because of the individual impact of this disease. Although, the initial steps that can be taken to give them the best shot at a life in recovery can be quite similar. Residential treatment provides the opportunity to customize a treatment plan to an individual based on their life circumstances.
