All this talk of a healthy gut, what does it actually mean? 👇🏼 check it 👇🏼
Many autoimmune conditions and chronic diseases can be linked to the gut. How? Did you know that the majority of our immune system lives and patrols near our gut in case any pathogens from our food cross the membrane and enter our body? If someone has “leaky gut” they can experience a variety of symptoms that usually stem in and around inflammation (immune response)
How can we ensure we have a healthy gut to prevent some of these issues? Eat a diet centered around high protein and whole foods.
Tip 1 - eat the rainbow consists of diversifying your fruit and vegetable intake to feed different colonies of microbes/bacteria in our gut. Research has established that diversity of gut microbiota is key to preventing lots of chronic disease states!
Tip 2 - Quantity. Recent research has developed new protocols for ensuring each person gets enough plant based foods each week. This leads to the recommendation of eating 30 different types of fruits and veggies each week to continue to feed that gut diversity, ensure maximal micronutrient profiles and making sure we are getting an effective dosage of fiber!
Tip 3 - Fiber! Fiber has been linked to reducing cancer and even more so, colore**al cancer has been steadily rising with recommendations for younger men less than the age of 40 to begin getting their re**al exams to screen for cancer risk. However these effects can be strongly mitigated if we simply eat enough fiber throughout the day to ensure a happy, healthy gut! This goal makes out to be about 30g of fiber per day per person. Men needing slightly more , closer to 40g per day. Consider fiber as your 4th macronutrient!

Long Beach Half Marathon was a true test of overcoming adversity. I had originally been training for this race for about 6 months but 1 month out and in the middle of my “peak” phase I injured my hip and pelvis. This derailed a lot of my training as I had issues walking, bending forward and obviously running. I was limited with what I could do, to the point where in the last month of training I ran once and had to stop after 1 mile due to intense pain and cramping in my glute and hip. That last run was a little over a week before the race. I was hesitant to race because I didn’t know if I would be able to get through 2 miles let alone finish. However, I’m glad to say that with tremendous support and faith I was able to complete my first half marathon in 2:36:30.

Health is our greatest asset. Money doesn’t matter if you don’t have health. Ask a sick man what he wants and it’s only one thing! Prioritize your health and see how much you can achieve.

The Recovery Paradigm: What is it?🤔
This is an easy visual that I utilize to work with patients who are very active. If you find yourself constantly injured or struggling with nagging pains and discomfort when lifting, running or any type of exercise it is important to STOP 🛑 and REASSESS what you may be neglecting or missing in your training.
Now training often is mistaken for just working out 🏋️‍♂️ but there’s so much more beyond that. You can even look and say there’s a whole other HALF of the equation which is recovery!
Now based off the image, there are 3 main components of recovery with the first being Sleep.
When undergoing any training program, sleep 💤 😴 will always be the number one thing that must be addressed. Improving quantity (7-9 hours for most people is needed) and improving quality (deep sleep, REM sleep) is ESSENTIAL. It’s what allows our body to build itself back up from the hard training days and allows us to keep pushing!
Next is nutrition. Now, I am not dogmatic in my approach to nutrition as I believe a healthy balance is key. But prioritizing a high protein diet 🥩 🍣 with an emphasis on Whole Foods 🥕 🥦 🍎 and MINIMALLY PROCESSED foods (everything we eat is processed in some way unless you grow your own food) while getting a mix of different fat sources 🥑 🐟 and carbs will all make up to a well-rounded diet. Making sure we get enough calories to sustain our training is another key fundamental concept.
Lastly is everything else. Your massage guns, chiropractic adjustments, stretching, acupuncture, saunas, ice baths etc… don’t hate me yet but I think most of this stuff can be necessary to COMPLEMENT the first Two Ideas. Without the first two these modalities can only do so much for you before they “stop working”. But you can get great value from frequent stretching and mobility, chiropractic adjustments and other therapies to help aid your recovery and boost your training.
