Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the launch of a new AI-powered permitting software to help speed up the rebuilding process in Los Angeles following the Eaton and Palisades fires. The tool, developed by Archistar, will be provided free of charge to local governments and residents through a public-private partnership.
The software uses artificial intelligence, including computer vision and machine learning, to automatically check building plans for compliance with local zoning and building codes. This allows property owners to identify and correct issues before submitting their plans, significantly reducing review times from weeks or months to just hours or days.
Though the state does not directly handle local permitting, Newsom emphasized California’s role in cutting red tape and providing resources to help local governments rebuild faster. This effort aligns with the state’s broader strategy to support disaster recovery through innovation.
Both the City and County of Los Angeles are adopting the new tool. Mayor Karen Bass recently signed an executive directive to implement an AI pilot program, and the County passed a resolution to establish a unified permitting authority for the Altadena recovery center.
The initiative is supported by philanthropic partners including Steadfast LA, LA Rises, Autodesk, and Amazon. Leaders say the technology will streamline processes, reduce costs, and help residents return to their homes more quickly.
Archistar’s technology is already in use in over 25 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. It is also now available on a statewide contract, enabling other California communities to adopt the tool to streamline their own rebuilding efforts.
