I had the pleasure of being interviewed alongside other therapists about our experiences of sending clothes back to the motherland. Read more at the article linked below!

As a child, I resented sending my gently used clothes back to my family back home in Mexico. Now I see that it's a way to give back and stay connected to the people who made sacrifices for me.

Hello my first gen folks 👋🏽 The themes in this post may sound familiar to you. When cultural values and expectations of success are intertwined with work and personal value, we are primed and ready for overworking and burnout. Let me explain…as children of immigrants our discipline, perseverance and resilience can be a beautiful thing if we are goal driven. There’s no doubt that first gen children of immigrants have it down when it comes to reaching for their goals. We are not afraid of hard work, we never were. You may have had hard working and overworking parents who were relentless in their pursuits. Your push for excellence is admirable, but how are you treating yourself in your drive for excellence?

Have you paused to check in with how you are doing? As you work under pressure and pour all your energy into your work, what about your partners, children, family and friends? I’m here to remind you that our cultural values are not static, they can evolve and shift.

I know we can get caught up on making others proud because of our achievements, but what would make you feel proud? How do you define success? Now let’s remove finances and academics as an option for success. Now how would you define success? Sometimes our parents stories become our stories by default. We have an opportunity to define it for ourselves. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below.

Recently I read the the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2022 report and framework, the Five Essentials for Workplace Mental Health & Well-Being. It highlights the importance of protection from harm, connection & community, opportunity for growth, mattering at work and work life harmony.

If you’ve checked out my IG, then you know my content is focused on educating high achieving professionals on managing their mental health, reflecting on their professional needs/goals, strengthening coping skills and building resilience. Given the last few years it’s no wonder we have needed more support related to work matters and mental health.

Mattering at work is an important framework that can make or break us at work. It can impact our decision on whether to stay and work it out or plan our exit. When we feel that we are valued at work, we perform better. Additionally our stress can feel more manageable as we access our coping skills to navigate challenges and effectively communicate at work.

If you’re wondering if you feel valued at work, ask yourself the following questions:

💡Am I having positive interactions with colleagues?
💡Do my co-workers or managers appreciate my recommendations?
💡Do I have opportunities to participate in projects?
💡Have I been promoted? Have I been given a raise?
💡Am I given positive feedback?

What do you think? Share your thoughts on what makes you feel valued at work!

When it comes to imposter syndrome, letting ourselves be seen and praised is one of the most challenging things to embrace. As uncomfortable it may seem to acknowlege to yourself all your hard earned accomplisments, share it anyway. You are not bragging when you recognize all the good you do and all the good in you. This is not considered bragging in any way. There is no need to doubt your ability. Want that promotion? Have a new goal? Share your experise and skills to your employer. Share your gifts with us!
