Dr. George’s advice on stress…

Here are some tips on how to begin adapting your perception of stress in daily life:

Think of stress as a challenge.

When you frame something as a challenge for yourself, you automatically rewire your mind to look for solutions instead of only focusing on the threats.

Realize your body wants to help you.

Stress is not the enemy. Instead, think of it as your body energizing you so you can perform at maximum efficiency. Yes, your heart may be beating faster, but that's to get lots of fresh, oxygenated blood to your brain.

Practice mindfulness meditation at home. Here’s how:

1) Sit on a straight-backed chair or cross-legged on the floor

2) Focus on an aspect of your breathing, such as the sensations of air flowing into your nostrils and out of your mouth, or your belly rising and falling as you inhale and exhale.

3) Once you’ve narrowed your concentration in this way, begin to widen your focus. Become aware of sounds, sensations, and your ideas.

4) Embrace and consider each thought or sensation without judging it good or bad. If your mind starts to race, return your focus to your breathing. Then expand your awareness again.

Just remember that you can’t fail at meditation, you can only get better at it. Don’t beat yourself up if your mind wanders, it’s part of the process, just focus back on your breathing again.

Feeling Nervous About This Summer?
Practise Mindfulness and See How It Can Help!

The Summer sun is setting in and Spring is hopping out. Many are eager to get outdoors, enjoy the weather, and set out to do everything they weren’t able to last year.

While it’s an exciting thought, I’m sure there’s a large number of people who are equally nervous about whether or not they’ll be able to accomplish everything they want to do.

However, that worry is what distracts us from what’s important.

Spending an abundance of time ruminating on what could happen distracts us from the things happening in our life right now.

It’s important to absorb and process your present self instead of focusing on how things could possibly change in the future.
When we take time to be aware of ourselves, and our own surroundings, we are engaging in the practice of mindfulness.

It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot these days, but…

What does it really mean to be mindful?

Today, the American Psychological Association(APA) defines mindfulness as “a moment-to-moment awareness of one’s experience without judgment.”

The practice of mindfulness today is rooted in Buddhism with its early concepts founded around 2600 years ago.

The goal of practising mindfulness is to observe the stream of inner thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations as they freely flow through your mind.

Permit yourself to think without the intent of latching on to specific emotions, sensations, or ideas, but to identify how you feel as they come, and let them go.

Instead, simply experience what comes and goes in your mind and discover which mental habits produce a feeling of comfort or anguish.

As you become more comfortable with the widening range of your experiences over time; Mindfulness can unlock the door to greater happiness and self-awareness within.

“By letting go it all gets done. The world is won by those who let it go. But when you try and try, the world is beyond winning.”
~ Lao Tzu

If you’re out in the sun; take precautions!

A bit of sun may seem serene to start, but ensure to take proper precautions to avoid getting scorched!

Extreme heat is no joke; it can lead to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and possibly even worse.

The scary thing is, it’s our kids and our grandparents who are at highest risk.

So when making any plans to head outside, try to schedule activities outside of hours when the sun is highest, and hottest, in the sky.

If you do go outside, make sure to protect yourself through proper use of sunscreen, and find a cool, pleasant spot of shade under trees and canopies.

Remember to watch your water intake – drink plenty of water throughout the day, and replenish electrolytes by adding a little citrus and salt to your water.

In particular watch out for:

Feeling dizzy or disoriented
Overheating without any sweat
Inability to cool down despite proper precautions
Tingling sensations on the skin
Anyone experiencing any one of those should immediately notify someone, and move either inside or into a shaded area

Heat Drying You Out? Try A Warm Drink

This piece of advice that may seem somewhat backwards, but enjoying a warmer drink to quench your thirst on a hot day can also help to cool you down.

Similarly to the way spicy or pungent foods can cause us to sweat. Hot drinks can do the same by causing our blood vessels to dilate.

Sure, at first that hot drink will make you feel even warmer, but in the long run we cool ourselves more than we would with a cold cup of water through sweat evaporation.

Cold drinks only cool down our body temperature, but this can force the stomach to work harder to produce the heat needed to digest food, which makes you hotter and more thirst

Are you a fan of proper airflow?

Now this is a tip for staying cool that can go right over our heads – literally!

Did you know that ceiling fans actually have adjustable blades? It’s to direct the airflow in the center of the room either up, or down depending on the temperature.

During hot summer months you should rotate them counter-clockwise (lefty-loosey).

This will direct the air current downwards into the room, pushing cooler air up and around the sides creating flow.

You’re supposed to
“break a sweat” – Not drown in it!

The beautiful, endless cycle of nature is one we see year after year.

Can you feel it?

Days are getting longer, the weather’s getting warmer, it feels like there’s a vibrant energy in the air…

All the signs that Summer’s shining through!

But as temperatures hit those higher digits, a beautiful day can feel like a serious scorcher.

Thankfully our body has a natural way to keep itself cool – with a sweat!

Sweating is how our body regulates its temperature. When we feel hot, we sweat. The moisture on our skin evaporates, cooling us down in the process.

However, how much we sweat is more than an indicator of how hot we are.

What’s your favorite way to cool down?

Mine is spicy food, a warm glass of water, and a nice spot in the shade.

Now, for some people, at least two of those would seem pretty odd…

But I can explain.

While the wonderful weather may seem like a blessing – everything is best in moderation.

If you’ve been looking for any and all methods of cooling down, and escaping the heat…

Then here’s the logic behind my advice:

#1: Let’s Start With Spicy Food

Now snacking on something spicy may sound like the worst way to manage a hot day. There’s some science to back up why you should give more spice a try.

“hot” foods like cayenne, jalapeño, and habanero peppers get their heat from the chemical capsaicin, which excite the receptors in the skin that normally respond to heat.

Eating spicy food may send an initial flush of heat through your body but this heat makes the skin sweat. Once air makes contact with sweat on your skin, it starts to cool down the body’s temperature.

How are you staying cool?

Do you have to meditate to be mindful?

Meditation does help, but it’s not required.

Understandably, for many, the thought of trying meditation is beyond their usual comfort zone.

How can you tell if it’s working?

Thankfully if you’re uncomfortable at the thought, it doesn’t take sitting quietly cross-legged with your hands on your knees and your eyes shut for extended periods of time.

Another Way To Cultivate Mindfulness

By focusing your attention on your moment-to-moment sensations during everyday activities, you can casually cultivate mindfulness in a way that won’t obstruct most of your normal activities.

This is achieved through single-tasking: The method of doing one thing at a time and devoting your full attention to it.

As you floss your teeth, pet the dog, or eat an apple, slow down the process. Take your time and be fully present, involving all of your senses.
