Day 22 of Occupational Therapy Month 💛

Today we’re highlighting instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) — the everyday tasks that keep life running smoothly behind the scenes. These are the skills that allow people to live independently and stay connected to their homes and communities.

Think about all the things you do in a day that require planning, organization, and follow-through. Things like:
🛒 Grocery shopping and running errands
💊 Managing medications safely
💰 Handling finances and paying bills
🍳 Preparing meals and planning nutrition
🚗 Getting to appointments and navigating the community
📅 Keeping track of schedules, routines, and responsibilities

When these tasks become difficult due to injury, illness, disability, or even just life transitions, occupational therapy practitioners step in to help. They work alongside individuals to build strategies, adapt environments, and develop routines that make these activities more manageable and meaningful.

It’s never just about completing a task. It’s about maintaining independence, building confidence, and supporting people in living life on their own terms.

That’s the heart of occupational therapy 💫

Day 21 of Occupational Therapy Month 💙

Today we’re recognizing the vital role occupational therapy plays in supporting mental health.

Our start in occupational therapy has roots in mental health. The profession emerged in the early 1900s from the belief that participation in meaningful activity could support healing, well-being, and recovery. That history continues to shape the work OT practitioners do today.

OT practitioners help people build routines, develop coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, support sensory needs, and engage in the meaningful activities that bring purpose and joy to daily life.

Occupational therapy can support:
• Stress management
• Executive functioning
• Sensory regulation
• Sleep routines
• Social participation
• Community engagement
• Building independence through meaningful occupations

Mental health is health, and occupational therapy helps people participate fully in the things that matter most.

Day 20 of Occupational Therapy Month also celebrates Patriots’ Day 🇺🇸 and the running of the Boston Marathon 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️♿🦼

Today we celebrate participation, performance, and access 💙

Did you know the Boston Marathon includes adaptive athletes across multiple divisions, including wheelchair racers ♿🦼 handcyclists 🚴 duo teams 🤝 and para athletes 🏅

A few amazing stats:
• 51 wheelchair racers are expected this year 🦼
• Adaptive athletes compete in dedicated divisions
• The race has included wheelchair athletes since 1975
• Access in sport continues to grow because inclusion matters 🌟

Occupational therapy practitioners help make participation in sport possible through:
• Adaptive equipment recommendations 🛠️
• Wheelchair and mobility support ♿🦼
• Energy conservation and endurance strategies 💪
• Training support for activities of daily living and sport 🏃
• Advocacy for accessibility and inclusion 🌈

From the clinic to the marathon course, occupational therapy supports people doing the things that matter most ❤️

Today we celebrate every athlete moving forward, every barrier being challenged, and every finish line made more inclusive 🎉

Congratulations to everybody, completing the Boston Marathon! We are cheering you on from afar!! 📣😁👏🏼

Day 19 of Occupational Therapy Month: Accessible Sports and Recreation 🏃‍♀️🎲

Today I ran The Gamble, a race where you roll a dice and run that many 1.6 mile loops. I rolled an 8, so 13.2 miles it was!

Today feels like the perfect day to highlight how occupational therapy supports access to sports and recreation for everyone.

Participation in movement, play, and sport is a meaningful occupation, and OT practitioners help make these spaces more accessible, inclusive, and adaptable.

Some examples of adaptive and accessible sports include:

• Wheelchair basketball
• Adaptive cycling
• Para swimming
• Sled hockey
• Wheelchair tennis
• Adaptive rock climbing
• Sitting volleyball
• Adaptive surfing
• Track and field with prosthetics or racing chairs
• Inclusive dance and cheer

From adaptive equipment and mobility supports, to modifying activities, improving endurance, building skills, and removing barriers to participation, occupational therapy helps people engage in the sports and recreational activities they love.

Sports should be for everybody. 💙

It is World Autism Month! 💙

At Mobility Matters, we recognize that autism isn’t something to be “fixed.” Autistic individuals are people first, each with their own strengths, challenges, and unique ways of experiencing and interacting with the world.

As occupational therapists, we support individuals with autism in meaningful, functional ways, including:
⭐️ Sensory processing and integration
⭐️ Emotional regulation
⭐️ Low muscle tone and motor development
⭐️ Feeding and mealtime participation
⭐️ Access to adaptive and safety equipment
⭐️ Building independence in daily living skills

Through this work, and through the mission of Mobility Matters, we strive to promote inclusion, accessibility, and independence for every individual we serve.

This month and every month, we advocate for understanding, acceptance, and support, not just awareness. 💙

Day 17 of celebrating Occupational Therapy Month is all about adaptive equipment 🛠️💛

Adaptive equipment helps people stay independent, safe, and engaged in the things that matter most in their daily lives.

Occupational therapy practitioners play a huge role in identifying the right tools and training individuals on how to use them effectively 🙌

Today we’re highlighting a variety of adaptive equipment you might see in action:

Reachers help individuals grab items without bending or overreaching 🧍‍♀️
Adaptive feeding equipment like built-up utensils or plate guards support independence during meals 🍽️
Walkers and canes improve balance and mobility while reducing fall risk 🚶‍♂️
Wheelchairs provide mobility and access for individuals with limited ambulation ♿️
Computer access systems like adaptive keyboards or mouse alternatives support work, school, and communication 💻
Audio and text-to-speech systems assist individuals with vision or reading challenges 🔊
Shower chairs and grab bars increase safety in the bathroom 🚿
Dressing aids like sock aids and button hooks promote independence with self-care 👕
Transfer benches and lift systems assist with safe movement between surfaces 🛏️
Environmental control units allow individuals to control lights, TVs, and more with ease 🏡

Adaptive equipment is not one-size-fits-all. Occupational therapy practitioners evaluate each person’s needs, environment, and goals to find the best fit 💡

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the equipment… it’s about helping people live life to the fullest 💛

Day 16 of celebrating Occupational Therapy Month 💛

Today is all about falls prevention 🚶‍♀️

Falls can have a huge impact on independence, confidence, and overall health, especially for older adults 💔 Occupational therapy practitioners play a key role in helping people stay safe while continuing to live life on their terms 💪

We look at the whole picture 🧠 From home safety and environmental modifications 🏡 to strength, balance, and daily routines, we help reduce risk while promoting independence. Sometimes it is as simple as removing a throw rug, improving lighting 💡, or recommending adaptive equipment. Other times it involves building strength, coordination, and confidence to safely move through daily life.

Occupational therapy practitioners also assess fall risk by looking at things like medication management 💊, vision 👀, cognition 🧩, bathroom safety 🚿, footwear 👟, and how a person moves through their daily routines. We evaluate transfers, functional mobility, and habits that may increase risk, then provide individualized strategies to improve safety.

We support falls prevention through:
✔️ Home safety assessments and modifications 🏡
✔️ Training in safe transfers and mobility 🔄
✔️ Strength, balance, and endurance activities 💪
✔️ Education on proper use of assistive devices 🦯
✔️ Routine and habit modifications to reduce risk 🔁
✔️ Caregiver and family education 👨‍👩‍👧

Falls prevention is not about limiting activity 🚫 It is about empowering people to move safely, stay active, and maintain their quality of life ✨

Occupational therapy helps people stay steady, safe, and strong 💛

Day 15 of Celebrating OT Month 🧠✏️

Today we’re highlighting the role of Occupational Therapy in schools!

OTs help kids succeed in the classroom by supporting skills that are essential for learning and participation.

This includes:

✨ IEP support by collaborating with teachers and staff to create individualized plans that help students thrive

✏️ Handwriting skills including fine motor control, pencil grasp, and written expression

🎯 Focus and attention by helping students stay engaged, organized, and regulated throughout the school day

🧩 Sensory processing support to help students manage noise, movement, and classroom demands

🪑 Classroom positioning and seating to improve posture, access, and endurance

🎒 Independence with school tasks like organizing materials, managing backpacks, and completing routines

🤝 Social participation skills including turn-taking, group work, and peer interaction

School-based OTs work behind the scenes and in the classroom to make sure every child has the tools they need to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They also support teachers with strategies and modifications that benefit the entire classroom.

Every small skill builds confidence. Every bit of support makes a difference 💛

✨ Occupational Therapy Month – Day 14 ✨

💛 Before & After OT Outcomes That Show Real Change 💛

Occupational Therapy Practitioners do much more than assist with daily tasks. They deliver evidence-based, functional interventions that directly improve safety, independence, and quality of life.

🚫 Before OT-Led Intervention:

Individuals often present with significant functional limitations that impact everyday life. This may include frequent falls, poor balance, unsafe mobility, and difficulty completing basic ADLs such as dressing, bathing, and toileting.

Many patients rely heavily on caregivers due to weakness, pain, fatigue, or poorly fitted mobility equipment that increases shoulder strain and reduces efficiency.

These challenges often result in decreased independence, increased caregiver burden, and reduced participation in meaningful daily activities.

🌟 After OT-Led Interventions:

Research consistently supports the impact of OT-led interventions in improving functional outcomes. Studies show that occupational therapy can reduce fall risk by up to 36% in at-risk adults and significantly improve independence in activities of daily living such as dressing, grooming, and mobility tasks.

With intervention from Occupational Therapy Practitioners, patients often demonstrate improved safety with transfers, increased independence with ADLs, and better energy conservation strategies that reduce fatigue and pain. In addition, properly addressed seating and positioning needs can improve posture, reduce upper extremity overuse injuries, and enhance overall functional mobility.

Patients frequently report improved confidence, reduced pain, and a greater ability to engage in home and community life.

💛 The Bottom Line:

Occupational Therapy Practitioners and OT-led interventions are evidence-based, client-centered, and life-changing. They do not just improve function.

They improve how people live every day.

✨ Independence, safety, and dignity are not abstract goals. They are measurable outcomes.

Happy Occupational Therapy Month! 💛 Day 14

Today we’re celebrating the nonprofits that are truly doing the work and shining a light on Mobility Matters Foundation ✨

Founded by OT Amy Siegler and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Kendell Blunden, this incredible organization stepped up when North Carolina Medicaid unexpectedly sunsetted telehealth services, leaving many without access to essential care.

Mobility Matters Foundation provides pro bono occupational therapy evaluations for DME and accessibility needs, ensuring individuals still receive the support they deserve. This student run organization, guided by a dedicated OT/OTA team and board, has already served over 300 individuals 🙌

They also host their amazing Bike Day 🚲 because they believe every child deserves a bike. So far, more than 40 children have been evaluated for adaptive bikes, with grants written to help cover the cost, since these life changing pieces of equipment are often not covered by insurance.

And the impact doesn’t stop there! Each year, MMF hosts a co****le tournament fundraiser, be sure to join in this September! There will also be a car show Saturday July 25th, 2026 11-2 in Asheville, NC 🚗 (https://www.facebook.com/events/735075539445478)

This is what advocacy in action looks like. Supporting access, participation, and inclusion for all 💛

Day 12 of celebrating Occupational Therapy Month is all about inclusion 💛✨

Inclusion is something we should advocate for always. Not just because it is the law or because it is the “right” thing to do, but because every single person deserves to belong, participate, and be seen 🤝💙

One of my favorite things about being involved with my girls in the elite cheerleading world has been the opportunity to witness true inclusion in action. The twins have loved watching and cheering for them! My girls have loved seeing true inclusion in a sport they love! 📣💖

One of my absolute favorite parts of this season has been watching the athletes from 💚🖤 Hope Elite Cheerleading 🖤💚. They are a remarkable and talented group who are not only a fan favorite, but truly bring so much joy to the floor. Their smiles, their energy, and their love for the sport shine in every performance ✨🏆

I have also had the opportunity to get to know many of the families on this team, and they are just as incredible. Supportive, encouraging, and the definition of what a cheer community should look like 💕🙌

Inclusion means everyone. Every ability. Every voice. Every person 💫🌍

Great job and congratulations to 💚🖤 Hope Elite Cheerleading 🖤💚 on their incredible season! 🎉🏅

Occupational therapy practitioners are always advocating for all 💙✨
