If I could offer only one piece of advice as I just finished my 37th year of life it would be to learn to enjoy your own company ♥️

Although I kicked off my 3 day celebration with some wining and dining with someone dear to me, I spent the last 36 hours savoring some solitude in the hills of Santa Barbara county.

Drove through the beautiful countryside, took myself to dinner and enjoyed a quite night in a cute hotel I’d always wanted to stay at.

I’d even lost my cell the night before (which didn’t get returned to me until tonight) so I couldn’t even look at my phone.

It was glorious 🥰

When was the last time you took yourself out to dinner?

Or better yet, the last time you spent more than 24 hours without your cellphone?

It’s normal to feel grief, numb, shutdown, disoriented, disconnected, hopeless, helpless, exhaustion, digestive issues, pit in your stomach, collapsed, weeping, want to hide under the covers, withdrawal, nausea and more as a response to the truly horrific events we’ve been witnessing as well as the inability of our government to appropriately respond in order to keep our citizens and CHILDREN safe.

This is how our nervous system responds (on our behalf, beyond our control) in the face of life threat.

In the future, I will offer more info and resources on how to become more resilient and increase the flexibility within your nervous system…

But today I just want to let you know that you are not alone in your tears, your overwhelm or your numbness.

Wanna know my #1 tip for ending chronic stress and preventing burnout?

Understanding your autonomic nervous system!

The VAGUS NERVE (pictured on the left) is the longest nerve in your body and it is the physical framework for your autonomic nervous system and how your brain and body communicate with each other.

It wanders through much of your body connecting your face, heart, lungs, intestines and other internal organs to your brainstem all in an effort to help your body quickly determine if a given environment is safe, dangerous or potentially life threatening and then automatically responds on your behalf in order to help you survive.

But you don’t need to know complex neurobiology in order to help yourself end stress and burnout… I really love the metaphor of the Polyvagal Ladder (shout out to Deb Dana and Stephen Porges for their invaluable research!):

VENTRAL is when you’re feeling safe, social, connected and welcomed. And there is a lot of correlation to the face: a smile on your face or a twinkle in your eye.

SYMPATHETIC is when you’re feeling mobilized, worried about threat/danger, read to protect and defend yourself. When you’re in this part of your nervous system you’re likely to feel it in your chest: a racing heart, faster breathing, tension in your shoulders and neck.

DORSAL is when you’re feeling so much threat you collapse and shut down. And there’s a big correlation to the gut: that sinking feeling in your stomach, wanting to crawl into a ball and hide away from the world.

When you know what part of your autonomic nervous system is most active you have vital information about how your body is perceiving your current environment and how that might relate to your lived experience.

Combine that awareness with body-based regulation tools to help you shift your state and you’re on your way to being in the driver seat of your experience which honestly feels like FREEDOM.

Now, don’t get me wrong!

I give myself a manicure often because they make me feel pretty, elegant and put-together 💅🏻

And I take a hot shower or bath almost every night as part of by bedtime routine 🛀

These are lovely rituals of self-care.

However, there are many other habits and rituals that I believe are even more important and powerful. Like:

🌊Getting high quality sleep

🌊Saying no when I’m already feeling over my capacity

🌊Investing time & energy in relationships that feed my soul

🌊Eating nutrient-dense food that does not spike my blood sugar

🌊Budgeting and prioritizing my money in ways that create longterm financial stability

Distinguish between forms of self-care that are “quick fixes” and longterm strategies for thriving is so important.

Ain’t nothing wrong with a quick fix, but just make sure you’re also working toward these longterm strategies that prevent chronic stress and burnout.

When your smoothie matches your outfit! 😂

Wow! It’s been a long few weeks for me, but I think I’ve survived it because I’ve still got a smile on my face and a twinkle in my eye ✨

Let me help break this down for you…

When your Sympathetic Nervous System is activated, your body uses ALL SORTS of mechanisms to make sure that you’re ready to respond to what’s in front of you:

🌊Muscle tension
🌊Heat in the body
🌊Racing heart
🌊Sweaty armpits
🌊Dry mouth

And if your Sympathetic Nervous System is activated and someone offers you constructive feedback, you’re far more likely to respond with:

🌊Being overly defensive
🌊Easily jumping to judgment or criticism
🌊An underlying tone of aggression

Like firing back an insult about your doctor’s hair, for example 😂

If you’ve ever noticed any of these body-based signs of sympathetic arousal or the behaviors they lead to in your own life and you’re curious to know more, I’ve got a free training!

Understanding how the nervous system responds on your behalf and how you can learn to regulate it is my #1 secret to preventing chronic stress and preventing burnout and I wanna share all my insights with you!

Mind if I get a bit personal?

They say home is where the heart is. For me, that means home is where the comfy, cozy clothes are. Even though it never really gets *that* cold during winter here in Los Angeles, I love turning on the fireplace, putting on my sherpa-lined sweats and wrapping myself in a fleece robe.

Home wouldn’t feel like home without it!

What makes you feel most at home? I wanna hear about it in the comments below!

What’s one of your favorite mantras??

Mantras are quick phrases that you repeat to yourself that can shift your mood and state and help keep you focused.

But not all mantras are created equal!

My #1 tip to find the right mantra for you is to tune into how your BODY responds when you say it.

Does your body relax, release tension and you feel expansive and a sense of hope and possibility? ✅

Does your body constrict, feel tense, and you feel like your just bullsh*tting yourself and it’s never going to be possible for you? ❌

I’d love to know what one of your favorite mantras is… share in the comments below!

In a society that is as deeply capitalistic as the US, workaholism is often celebrated. We grind and hustle and accomplish… but do we ever stop to think why the hell we’re trying to achieve so much so quickly?

With anxiety, stress and burnout at an all time high, I really hope the tides are changing with regards to our relationship to work.

What do you think? Do you think there is a cultural shift on the horizon?
