🍼 Breast Milk Production — 5 Things You Might Not Know
▪️ 1. Milk production is highest at night
Between 1 AM and 5 AM, the hormone prolactin is most active. Skipping night feeds can lead to a faster drop in milk supply.
▪️ 2. Milk changes during a feed
The milk at the beginning is thinner and helps quench thirst, while the milk that comes later is richer and higher in fat, helping your baby gain weight. That’s why it’s important to let your baby finish one breast before switching.
▪️ 3. Stress can affect milk flow
High stress levels can reduce oxytocin, the hormone responsible for milk let-down. Staying calm helps milk flow more easily.
▪️ 4. Formula feeding can reduce supply
When a baby suckles less at the breast, the body gets the signal that less milk is needed, and production gradually decreases.
▪️ 5. Hydration matters a lot
Breast milk is about 87% water. If you don’t drink enough fluids, your body may struggle to produce enough milk. Aim for at least 10–12 glasses of water a day.
