Meet the Judges 👨⚖️👩⚖️
Judge Leonard Torrealba serves as the Judicial Officer for the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, graduating from UCLA and earning his J.D. from George Washington University. Leonard was born and raised in Venezuela and moved to Los Angeles at age 17. Leonard worked as a trial lawyer for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for 34 years, where he was assigned to various trial and management positions, including the Public Integrity, Healthcard Fraud, and Consumer Protection Divisions. He founded the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Notario Fraud Unit and served as the unit’s first deputy in charge. Leonard was a founder of the Latino Prosecutors’ Association and Latino Prosecutors’ Foundation, serving multiple terms as President for both organizations. Leonard was on the board of direectors Amnesty International from 2020-2023 and is an advocate of human education for school age children, political integrity, and corporate accountability throughout the world.
Judge Shelly Torrealba grew up in Rural Michigan and spent her summers milking cows and driving tractors on her family’s small dairy farm. She graduated from Central Michigan University and earned her J.D. from Southwestern Law School. Shelly was the first in her family to graduate from college, and based on her grandmother’s genealogy research, she is the only lawyer, now judge, in her entire family history. Before being appointed to the bench in December 2010, she was a Deputy District Attorney for 17 years with assignments in the S*x Crimes Divison, Justice System Integrity Division, and Community Prosecution. Judge Torrealba is a former Assistant Supervising Judge of Criminal Limited Jurisdiction, has presided over a variety of felony and misdemeanor jury trials, and is currently assigned to the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, presiding over long-cause preliminary hearings. Judge Torrealba is dedicated to community outreach, which is exemplified by her involvement in a variety of mentoring programs.
