Most of what I have to say is slightly long-winded, tinged with sarcasm and covered with a good dusting of cocoa powder – take it as you will.

Cheers to the long weekend.
Had a bit of a play a week (or five) ago. Used what was on hand, and chased limited time. Drank it when I was done.
Local CA gin, Italian aperitif wine, punchy sparkling water, blood orange. Single bare strobe. That’ll do.

Felt cute, might delete later. Insert quote about cracks being how the light gets in ✨. Hollywood, CA. May, 2023.

Apparently today is National Strawberry Day, it’s overcast and raining in LA (so a plate of sunshine is absolutely necessary), and if you’ve been here for more than a hot second you know how I feel about toast.
🍞🍓🥒🌱
Toasted sourdough, goat chèvre (or vegan cream cheese), sliced strawberries, cucumber ribbons, fresh mint, olive oil, black pepper, just a pinch of salt. Go forth and feast.

What’s your order? 🍳

When the middle little insisted on buying quail eggs over Christmas, but due to allll the other food we never cooked them, I simply couldn’t let the little guys go to waste.
🥚
Could I have made one dish? Of course. Did I instead prepare quail eggs four ways, bake mini loaves of brioche, make mini waffles, dig through the prop closet for the smallest dishes, and set up an entire table? Of course I did.

Swipe to the end for reference on the size of the eggs and loaf.

Me: I should do some kind of 2021 wrap up reel as my first post of the year, or maybe some celebratory New Years thing from the archives...

Also me: Look! I put stuff on toast, it was delicious, you should make it!

For those keeping score: a combo vaguely inspired by cilbir turkish eggs, but lazier and dairy free, and on toast 🤷🏼‍♀️. Homemade spelt sourdough, vegan (cashew) yoghurt, jammy (7min) eggs, chilli crisp, toasted sesame seeds, kosher salt, coffee.

And for the visual but not literal people: 🍞🍦🥚🌶🍂☕️
..now I think this is where I ask you to share this post! And save it for later! And inquire what’s on your plate! Does that sound right?! Great! If you need me I’ll be eating toast (and playing today’s Wordle 😆) and shooting client videos 📹. Have a good one kids, stay safe. x~JJ.

OYSTERS are never a bad idea. Especially with a substantial plate of crudo, grilled bread, something fresh and vegetal, an addictive tostada, and a few beverages. To say we have a habit would not be far from the truth 🦪💙😆.

Hands up oyster lovers 👋🏻 (if not we’ll have yours 🤣)

Fun fact - It’s been just over 32 months (yep, really) since I last posted a restaurant shot to my feed. That one was also LA, during some trip or another, before living here was actually even on the cards. Life is a funny one.

Truly wish I had something poignant to say, but I’m waiting for my strobe battery to recharge and figured now was as good a time as any to share this sandwich from a few weeks ago 🤷🏼‍♀️. Of course now it’s all I want to eat - at least I know what I’ll be having for lunch.

Everyone in the northern hemisphere on the Internet: happy autumn 🍁🍂!!! Have a pumpkin spiced thing!

Me: f-that, here’s a summer salad, I’m buying all the late season tomatoes and stone fruit this weekend and landing face down in this plate. Just need a glass of rose to round it out 😉. If you need me I’ll be sitting in the sun at mid-day ⛱. (*Disclaimer, I love pumpkin anything, but I love summer more 😆)

I have a confession, the other day I ordered a $17 avocado toast... 😳
—-
You see, we went out to a new to us brunch place and it was terrible (long wait, average food), but on top of that I was starving long before the long wait, and therefore hangry after hardly picking at the food (huevos covered - drowned - in what tasted like cheap jarred enchilada sauce 🤨)... first world problems? Yep, but ours all the same.

As we left, RJ asked if I wanted to go to a nearby spot we both like. It felt silly and unnecessary, but we were a 25 min walk from home - so to second brunch we went. All I wanted was the avo toast, even at a hefty $17. It was possibly one of the best pieces of toast I’ve ever eaten 🤣. Was it a situational reaction to a lovely courtyard in a restaurant we know we like? Perhaps. Was it just a really good plate of avo toast? Maybe. Was it very (or not very) LA to pair it with a glass of red and a side of grilled octopus? Probably. And I’m fine with all of that.

Anyway, I didn’t take any photos that day - of the bad or the good - so you’ll have to use your imagination for all of it.

The next day I made avocado toast for breakfast - inspired more by an old Sydney fave than the previous day’s meal: 🍞 homemade half-spelt sourdough, 🥑 avo mashed with yuzu juice, sesame and nigella seeds, 🌶 chilli crisp, post workout, morning light. It was delicious. I’d be happy to make it for you, at the bargain price of $17. 🤣

Toast, always and in all ways. Another one from a lifetime ago... (do I stop saying that for each post, and pretend I’m prolifically creative at the moment - instead of simply searching drives for things long forgotten during the past few years of madness, aka good at admin? And if it’s pretty and delicious, does it even matter? I think perhaps not.

In any case, toast. All made here with pear, but each would perform just as well with anything from apple or peach, to banana, mango, or plum - and as such I’ve taken complete creative-fruit liberties in the ingredient lists below.

Clockwise from top left:
🍞 almond butter, 🍑, 🫐 , granola
🍞 tahini, 🌱, 🍎, fennel, sumac
🍞 chocolate pb, 🍌, cacao nibs, bee pollen
🍞 coconut yoghurt, radicchio, 🍐, pecans, thyme
🍞 🥑, 🥭, goat feta, dukkkah

I feel I should say something profound and informative, yet lighthearted, but all I have is this:

🦠 Isolation is for the good of the population, not to inconvenience you. If this virus continues to spread at the current rate our hospital systems will collapse (as they have in Italy and Washington state). It will come down to choosing who is helped (because there are only so many beds and so much equipment) and who is deemed too late/sick/elderly/unattached to help.

🏡 Stay at home, if you have to go out keep a safe distance - a metre (yard / 3 feet) - between you and the people around you. It makes a difference. If you feel sick don’t go out. Just don’t. Delaying things (‘starting from Monday’ doesn’t help, viruses don’t take the weekend off).

🧻 Stop hoarding start sharing. More stuff won’t protect you from this, yet it may hurt others. Stop being angry at the people trying to help.

🧼 Wash your damn hands. Well, often. Don’t touch your face. Push buttons with elbows, open doors with paper (if available - damn hand dryers), sneeze or cough into a tissue or the crook of your arm (if you’re sick stay home).

🥬 Wash raw fruit and veg with dish soap or cook it before eating. This is big.

☕️ Support small business where you can - they are the ones that will fall over first in this, but they are also ones who will deliver food and goods if it comes down to it.

🎥 Don’t let the media make this war something it isn’t. Read informative science-driven reports if you want to know more, listen to medical doctors not politicians.

🔮 Be safe, and keep each other safe. Flatten the curve. xx ~ JJ
