2nd NA Tradition - 2nd Month π¨ π«΅βοΈ
The Second Tradition of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) states:
"For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authorityβa loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern".
This tradition serves as a foundational guideline for leadership and decision-making within the fellowship, focusing on humility, service, and spiritual guidance rather than personal ego or authority.
Key Principles of Tradition 2
Ultimate Authority (Group Conscience):
Decisions in NA are not made by individuals, officers, or popular members, but through a "group conscience"βa collective, prayerful, and thoughtful decision-making process.
Trusted Servants, Not Governors:
Leaders in NA (secretaries, GSRs, committee members) are considered "trusted servants." Their role is to serve the group, not to dictate, govern, or hold power over others.
Focus on Purpose:
The tradition ensures that the group remains focused on its primary purposeβcarrying the message to the addict who still suffersβby minimizing the influence of strong personalities.
Spiritual Guidance:
It encourages relying on a Higher Power, as understood by the group, rather than personal opinion.
Application in NA
Rotation of Leadership:
To prevent the accumulation of power, service positions are rotated, ensuring no single member becomes a permanent "boss".
Avoiding "Bleeding Deacons":
The tradition warns against "bleeding deacons" (members who feel the group cannot function without them) and encourages "elder statesmen" (members who offer wise counsel without needing control).
Decision Making:
When conflicts arise, the group relies on the collective conscience to guide them, rather than relying on a single leader's decision.
In essence, the Second Tradition protects NA from self-destruction by replacing personal ambition with selfless service and spiritual unity.
