Our very own Nancy Hayakawa received a touching shout out from California Hospital's Human Resources Department for moving mountains to make CHMC's employee survey a success.

Nancy worked 8-10 hour days making phone calls reminding our staff to complete their surveys on time. The interim Director of Human Resources, Amy Mantell, states: "The Human Resources team would like to give a BIG thanks to Nancy, our tireless volunteer, who made calls to staff encouraging everyone to take the survey."

We would like to thank Nancy and all of our current volunteers for providing their time and best selves to CHMC.

California Hospital Medical Center’s (CHMC) Physician Mentor Program offers college students, who are interested in working in the medical field, an opportunity to be mentored by CHMC physicians.

Volunteers gain valuable experience from various physicians serving the underprivileged community in downtown Los Angeles.

Janae volunteered in the program from 2016-2017.

She states, "I have recently completed my third year of medical school within the Charles R. Drew/UCLA PRIME Program, a 5-year dual-degree program in which I will obtain my M.D. and Masters in Public Health. This was my dream program to be a part of and I am so grateful to be at this stage of my training. CHMC serves a very diverse patient population and volunteering at this hospital reaffirmed my desire to work with low-income patients from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.”

We would like to thank Janae and all of our current and former volunteers for providing their time and best selves to CHMC.

Mary Sidell, a NICU Cuddler, has been volunteering with California Hospital for approximately two years. Currently, she's provided over 160 cuddles to babies at CHMC's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Mary is excited to come back after an unprecedented year, "It's not just the babies I miss. I also miss the amazing nurses and doctors. They are helpful, supportive, appreciative, and I learn something new nearly every time I'm with them. Each puts their heart and soul into caring for these babies day and night."

We look forward to welcoming our NICU Cuddler Volunteers in July. The babies' can't wait to cuddle!

We would like to thank Mary and all of our current and former volunteers for providing their time and best selves to CHMC.

Volunteers gain valuable experience from various physicians serving the underprivileged community in downtown Los Angeles.

Paolo volunteered in the program on and off from 2013-2017.

He states, "I am a first year Physician Assistant student at Stanford School of Medicine. I believe CHMC played a huge part in my acceptance here. When I started my volunteering, I learned a lot about different professions in the medical field. This is where I began to develop the skills to communicate with patients and healthcare professionals.”

We would like to thank Paolo and all of our current and former volunteers for providing their time and best selves to CHMC.

Sophia Pei has been making art with CHMC's hospital patients since 2019 in her role as a Compassion Care volunteer.

Sophia shared that one of her most memorable experiences was working with a patient who had been in the hospital for over a month: "She told me that after having the opportunity to participate in our art sessions, she wouldn't mind staying in the hospital even longer. It makes me really happy that I could help make her time here more enjoyable."

In addition to bedside art, Sophia participates in our Physician Mentor program.

Sophia is currently studying Quantitative Biology at the University of California (USC) and is hoping to be a medical doctor in the future.

We would like to thank Sophia and all of our current and former volunteers for providing their time and best selves to CHMC.
