Level: 10/10 GENIUS

In song writing a constraint is a self imposed rule or lyric limitation that helps push one’s creativity while challenging the listener to pinpoint what it is.

In “A-“ Mickey Factz writes an entire song about the letter “A” while never using the letter A in any of the words/lyrics. Calling out celebrities lists, the origins of the letter, the shape, a certain rappers wife’s bra size…etc. All of this alludes to the letter A but doesn’t say the letter nor does the bars contain the letter.

Standout quatrain(s):

I’m the first to do this, tell people employ me
So just like the letter don’t put people before me

The letter N needs to be with it, or throw the towel

“I don’t need a six pack cuz baby I’m aboriginal” This line by was so dope I couldn’t stop thinking about it while I was in Australia. The reference to not needing a six pack can be looked at as a double entendre because he doesn’t need to drink a six pack of beer or have six pack ab. By mentioning shirt off, it leans more towards the six pack abs and then uses the AB to tie in the indigenous Australian people who are most often referred to as Aboriginals.

I swear Hip Hop is everything. Sitting on the north end of Bondi beach in Sydney Australia I see this guy rocking a J Dilla t shirt. First off that’s refreshing as I haven’t been as tapped in out here. Never being one to let a good Hip Hop convo pass, I sauntered over and said “Rough Draft or Donuts?” The man responds that he was a fan of Rough Draft and that the production there was important for X, Y and Z reasons. I talk to him about various rappers who flowed on Dilla, how Common lived with him for a period etc. I see the Lakers tat on his arm and we talk ball as the pristine Australian ocean keeps hitting our feet.

We talked about how music can heal, I tell him Ive written books on Hip Hop self expression, therapy and rhyming. I don’t give him the Amazon page, I don’t ask if I can send him one.

Although some sort of paparazzi found us, we don’t take a selfie. We don’t exchange info. We just talk and give our respect to each other through our respect for the music…and as always…Hip Hop is the conduit.

Fun Fact: As a mental health professional I used not only Hip Hop but sports as a way to connect with the kids. But once in awhile…..someone would talk just a bit too much s**t. This day in Compton I was shooting around with a client & chatting. But this one voice kept talking trash to us from the sideline. Including “old white guy”, being told I sucked and he could “kill me in one on one”. I respectfully asked a teacher there if “it was alright to school this kid”. He said “go for it”.

So with the watch, the hat, untied shoes and the school watching, we played ones.

I didn’t say a word to the young man I played but then let my client know… “that’s how you handle trash talk”.
