Would Works

Would Works We are a social enterprise providing people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty an opportunity to work by hand finishing wood products. Life changes.

Would-Works is a nonprofit social enterprise that gives people living in poverty or experiencing homelessness the opportunity to work by hand-finishing wood products. The person sets a goal and then works on credits to complete the goal. When the goal has been met Would-Works cuts a check directly to the goal. Here’s how it works:

Imagine: You are 53 years old, homeless, and you need new eye glasses. Eye glasses cost $200. Enter Would-Works. You can work for credits while learning basic skills assembling and packaging quality retail products. Every hour you work is ten credits, and a credit is worth one dollar. Credits pay for eye glasses. You work for 20 hours, and Would-Works cuts a check to your eye doctor. You become certified in basic work skills. Would-Works certification helps you find employment. Products are sold.

📣 2024 will undoubtedly be remembered as a pivotal year in the history of Would Works. Since reopening post Covid lockdown, we’re learned so much and have been working on ways to better serve our community.

📊 With the recent development of a strategic plan for 2025, Would Works is inviting you to join us, starting this , in raising capacity building funds that will:

1️⃣ Increase the number of participants for paid training services (from the current average of 20 to 30 Artisans annually)
2️⃣ Expand our whole person care model to include financial literacy courses, more robust career development services and on-site wellness counseling, in addition to the hot daily meals provided on all work days

🛣️ Sustaining pathways towards autonomy starts with a prepared Artisan. Your support enables WW to focus on growing our mission and programs to elevate and supplement Artisans’ readiness to learn a trade, make personal and professional connections and break away from the cycle of system-dependency!

Here’s how you can support:
1️⃣ Make a one time, end-of-year donation today, December 3, at Wouldworks.com
2️⃣ Become a recurring donor and support Would Works all year long

💫 With friends, family and the women of , we were able to gather yesterday to honor the life of our superstar Board member who departed this earth much too early.

🪚 Our Artisan Leader .mosley.503 and Shop Manager were able to lovingly build this garden bench in memory of Jeri with the support of our wonderful donors, utilizing trees we salvaged from LA’s own backyard

🧍🏽‍♀️Thank you Jeri’s daughter, Blair, for flying down from Oregon to join the ribbon cutting!

❤️ Jeri was a WW Artisan and board member, an artist and avid chronicler of African American history, a gardener, a community activist and a long time resident of DWC. She will forever live in our hearts!

🗞️ Extra extra! Our Tujunga Serving Utensil Set is featured at the top of this year’s Holiday Gift Guide!

🎁 Please consider joining the mission and vision of Would Works this gifting season! Our program approach and methodology supports pathways towards self-sufficiency and long-term career sustainability for system-impacted individuals, young adults transitioning out of foster care, and people experiencing or exiting out of homelessness in Los Angeles.

📝 12 years ago, Would Works was founded in response to the lack of dignified job training and work opportunities available to people who face barriers to employment. The aim was to build a place for all who “would work if they could”, a space to learn a new skill in a caring environment.

🏋️🏋️‍♀️🏋️Real change is created through the deep care of individuals coming together to say we are dissatisfied with what we see, hear, feel, smell, and taste. Would Works envision a future where communities and systems work together to advance human dignity, increasing creative economic opportunities for all and enabling people to thrive in balance with each other. Thus demonstrating that more equitable workforce models are possible.

💪 Our work now is more important than ever!

🧍‍♂️Meet Our Community!🧍‍♀️

👋 Say hello to Jasmine - one of our newest Board of Director members!

Jasmine is currently a Program and Operations Officer at the Arlene and Michael Rosen Foundation. She is a first-generation Salvadoran American who grew up in the San Fernando Valley. With over 10 years of experience in direct services, she has made an impact in areas such as supportive housing, domestic violence, incarceration, immigration, substance abuse, and public and mental health.

🎤 “After years of working in permanent supportive housing in LA, it’s very refreshing to see creativity being blended with needed services and resources for people experiencing/exiting homelessness… Would Works successfully offers a practical need —employment entry—with the magic that art can offer—patience, curiosity, collaboration, and confidence building.”

Outside the work environment, Jasmine is a curious traveler, book lover, and she is constantly looking to cook new dishes.

Welcome Jasmine! Would Works is grateful for the new energy and skills you’ll be bringing!
