Forget FOMO. The new worry isn't fear of missing out; it's fear, after a year of pandemic life, of returning to normal.

So much of the work I've been doing with my clients (via telehealth, of course) over the last two weeks has been helping them understand that they are not lazy, they are not unproductive, there is nothing wrong with them for finding it impossible to complete tasks they might normally be able to. This time is NOT NORMAL. We are going through a collective, global trauma right now and our brains have no frame of reference for how this will play out. For some people, this might mean that every time we've ever felt powerless, scared, alone or in danger can be activated as our subconscious searches for a nonexistent puzzle piece to try to make sense of this current experience.

BE KIND to yourself. If baking, gardening, cooking or cleaning bring you peace, then use that resource - even better if you can create a predictable routine, something to count on and expect in this time of incredible uncertainty. But please don't beat yourself up if you can't muster the energy or focus right now. Cocooning yourself and surviving this moment might be the main priority to focus on, and that is enough. Surround yourself with comfort in any way you can - take deep breaths, walk around the block in the sunshine, smile and greet your neighbor from across the street, make yourself a cup of tea and watch your favorite show, wrapped up in a soft blanket, and please reach out for support. We are all going through this together.

Psychotherapy for healing and growth

I wholeheartedly believe that any person could benefit from having the space, supported introspection and healthy relationship practice that therapy provides. All of us have experienced some degree of trauma, turmoil, stress, or heartbreak in our lives. Having a safe space to process and reflect can help us get through these most difficult moments, and can help us tease out and repair negative beliefs and turn down the volume on overwhelming emotional responses so that we can take what we need to learn from these experiences, and let the rest go.

Seeking the support of a therapist can be a powerful step toward increasing self-awareness and the ability to change patterns that are no longer productive. I collaborate with my clients to identify and work toward treatment goals, using a combination of practical skills and deeper work to explore and repair root issues that may be contributing to current problems. My therapeutic style is humanistic/relational, and I am always listening for ways that past traumas or attachment disruptions may be connected to current issues. The therapeutic relationship plays an important role in helping to recognize and heal these types of issues, and I frequently utilize Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to support this type of work. Change in therapy happens through a process of increased self-understanding, practicing new ways of engaging (with yourself, with others, with a particular problem or set of issues), and development and practice of coping strategies.

I feel deeply honored to be able to do this work, and find incredible joy in supporting my clients in their process. Please feel free to contact me to schedule a free 15 minute consultation to see if it feels like a good fit.
