Spent the last 4 days in the forest, unplugged from the internet and deeply connected with some incredible women and nonbinary friends. Honestly? It was exactly what my nervous system needed. So for now, I’m still riding this healing wave for my very tender body and heart 🌿💆‍♀️—be back sometime next week. 🙏

Your doctor might not mention these labs…

but that doesn’t mean they aren’t important 👀

These markers can give *huge* insight into your mood, energy, metabolism, thyroid, and more—and many of them are often covered by insurance.

You deserve to understand your body and feel your best.

And if you just saw this and thought, “Hmm, I haven’t run labs in a while?!” — this is your sign to make that appointment! ✨

So next time you’re getting labs done, *ask for these* 🧬🩺

If you grew up in the ’90s or early 2000s, chances are you were told to fear carbs and cut calories.

That was diet culture talking—

Here’s the truth: women need to eat.

Especially women who move 🏃‍♀️

Properly fueling your body before and after workouts can be the missing link to better energy, improved performance, muscle growth, stronger bones, quicker recovery, and more efficient fat metabolism.

Here’s a few quick guidelines to fueling your workouts:

👉 **Before your workout:** 10–15g of protein

👉 **After your workout:** 20–30g of protein

➕ Add a carb (like fruit) if you did cardio or HIIT

🌟 **In peri- or menopause?** Aim for 30–40g of protein post-workout

Wondering what that looks like in real food?

Check out the blog post linked in my bio for simple, realistic ideas to hit your goals—without overthinking it.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but... 👀

If you’re focusing on calories and macros, you’re completely missing what nutrition is actually about.

You can’t math your way to better health.

The real game-changer? FOOD QUALITY.

Aim to eat foods that resemble how they grew from the earth. Those vibrant, real ingredients are what nourish and heal your body – not the numbers on a label. 💫

Mother’s Day has always been layered for me.

It’s been almost 12 years since I lost my mom, and I still feel that absence deeply. In more recent years, a different kind of grief has surfaced — the ache of wanting to become a mom, the struggle through that in my former marriage, and the quiet pain of not having the family I once dreamed of.

I feel the weight of not having parents. I feel the emptiness of not having children of my own.

And yet, alongside the grief, there’s also deep joy. I love celebrating the incredible moms around me — the women who pour their hearts into their children and families. It’s beautiful and powerful, and I’m so here for honoring that too.

Grief is complex. It’s layered, raw, and deeply human.

So wherever you are today — celebrating, grieving, or somewhere in between — I’m wrapping you in the biggest hug.

You’re not alone.

Photos are of my ultra fabulous mama throughout our early years! ❤️

This is super important if you love protein shakes (like myself!).

A recent study found that nearly half of protein powders on the market were contaminated with heavy metals. But luckily, there are things we can do to protect ourselves and lower our exposur:

1. Plant-based protein powders showed higher levels of contamination. If you have limited information, choose whey, pastured egg, or grass-fed meat-based protein powders when possible.

2. Choose vanilla-flavored options when available, as chocolate flavors showed higher metal levels.

3. Look for brands with third-party testing certifications like NSF, GMP, or Clean Label Project or that pass California Prop 65 regulations

🥤 I also rounded up a list of high quality protein powders which are on my blog post - linked in my bio ⬆️⬆️⬆️

🎤 BIG NEWS! I’ve been selected as a TEDx speaker! 🎉

This September, I’ll be taking the stage at TEDx Camino Ramon in NorCal to speak about something deeply personal: how Functional Medicine can help heal trauma.

As someone who has survived complex trauma and works as a holistic dietitian, I know firsthand how trauma affects our bodies and minds. But I also know that we have incredible power to shape our healing journey.

My own trauma has actually fueled my purpose and passion. It’s why I’m so dedicated to teaching others about their bodies, nervous systems, and the power of nourishment for finding peace and healing.

📅 Mark your calendars for September 25th in the Bay Area! I would absolutely LOVE to see your faces in the audience! Bring friends, share this post, let’s spread the healing message together.

As a functional medicine dietitian you probably come to my page and expect to learn about the ins and outs of food, right?

I was scrolling through my posts and giggled bc I realized that I really don’t write about food too much (I will try more! What do you want to learn? 🤓🤓)

I practice nutrition because it’s truly the foundation for our health.

But I also share a lot about trauma, stress and nervous system regulation bc our thoughts, emotions and adrenal health directly impact our nutrition.

It’s strange to think of stress as a part of your nutrition, right? But it plays an intimate role in your nutritional physiology: stress impact blood sugar levels, deplete essential nutrients, negatively impact digestion / gut immunity /microbiome, and hormones and neurotransmitters.

Even after spending so many years in this space, the body continually blows my mind. Humans are such sensitive creatures but we’re also incredibly resilient.

And there are so so many ways we can support ourselves to support our nutritional physiology so we can feel more energized and vibrant throughout our lives as we inevitably navigate life’s challenges 🫶🏼🫶🏼

Happy October!!

October is breast cancer awareness month and tomorrow also happens to be my five year anniversary since my own breast cancer diagnosis 🥳🥳

Cancer doesn’t discriminate- I was a 31 year old functional medicine dietitian when I was diagnosed. I knew that cancer ran in my family (altho I was BRCA negative) and I had some environmental risks from growing up in nyc. But i never thought I I would be diagnosed so young.

One night I found a lump in my breast. The doctor tried to dismiss me. “It doesn’t feel like cancer.” He told me. “You’re too young for cancer, especially if the rest of the women in your family were 55+”. Nonetheless I pushed for a mammogram (which led to an ultrasound, a biopsy, mri, etc) and I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma - I would need a mastectomy.

Self detection and self advocacy ultimately saved my life.

I’m sharing this to encourage you to do your own breast checks. Feel your body so that you know it well! If something is off, you can feel confident investigating and advocating for yourself.

This is essential in today’s world!! Young adults are being diagnosed with cancer at alarmingly high rates. Not to add the risks / realities of our food system / medical system / insurance is driven by profits rather than helping people.

We must know our bodies best and be our own advocates 🫶🏼

You know when you find a thing that’s so life changing you want to tell everyone about it?

That’s exactly what breathwork has been for me ...

I am a highly anxious person at heart and also a survivor of complex trauma. I have been in therapy for almost two decades and can confidently say that breathwork has been one of the most powerful tools that has helped me process big emotions like grief.

Practicing breathwork has helped me feel more grounded, joyful and present.

Showing up and paying attention to my breath has literally changed my life, which is why I get so giddy about sharing it with other people.

Join me on Oct 2 and experience it for yourself!

In celebration of breast cancer awareness month (and to celebrate my five year mastectomy anniversary!) I will be hosting a virtual breathwork class. 50% of the proceeds will go to , a non-profit that support millennials with access to mentors, resources, and medical professionals who understand the intersection of breast health and the realities of breast cancer for this generation.

Oct 2 @ 5pm PST.
Sliding scale options!

24 years. ❤️‍🩹

I want to honor my father today: Steven A Jacobson.

My dad was killed on 9/11, but he’s more than how he died.

He was a first generation American - born to Holocaust survivors. He was kind, loving and absolutely brilliant - learned to become a broadcast engineer at night school while simultaneously working two jobs. He had extremely dry humor. When someone would tell him to have a nice day, he would reply “don’t tell me what to do”, followed by a wink and a cheeky grin. Of course he had his faults - he was extremely strict and loved the word NO - but he loved fiercely. He fought for a better life for me and my sister, and I am so grateful for the short amount of time I knew him.

9/11 has impacted my life in so many ways beyond losing my dad. You can read the details in my Huff Post article I published a few years ago (linked in my bio). In short, the environmental impact of the towers falling poisoned both me and my mother. My mother - Deborah “Deb” Jacobson - died of lung cancer in 2013, and I luckily won the battle with my own breast cancer in 2019.

But I refuse to let my loss and suffering be in vain.

That ONE DAY was rooted in so much hate, division and xenophobia. And looking at the state of the world today, the hate and fear has gotten even worse.

The question I have been asking myself for decades now: if hate breeds more hate, can love do the opposite? I now know the answer: yes. It might sound corny AF but love is the most powerful agent of change. On days that I forget, I remember the love my parents had for me, what they did to fight for me, and let that guide what I put out into the world.

My prayer for all of us is that we can love and heal ourselves regardless of the evils we encounter. This is the most powerful form of resistance. That we can each find ways to alchemize the hate of the world into healing, joy, and love.

Thank you so much for reading my story
