🧩💬 Does Your Autistic Child Struggle With Speech? Let’s Talk About Nonspeaking Autism.

Some autistic children don’t speak — but that doesn’t mean they aren’t communicating.
It also doesn’t mean they don’t understand, or that they won’t ever learn to speak.

At Forte Speech & Language Therapy, we support nonspeaking autistic children using AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) and neurodiversity-affirming care that celebrates every child’s communication style.

In our latest article, we explore:
🧠 What “nonspeaking autism” really means
📱 How AAC tools (like letterboards and speech devices) help children communicate
🚫 Why myths about nonspeaking autism are so harmful
🗣️ How speech therapy can help support expressive language in many forms

Every child deserves to be heard — even if they don’t use words.

Learn what nonspeaking autism really means, debunk common myths, and discover how speech therapy and AAC support communication.

When you hear the word “autism,” you might think of a child who’s socially reserved or who communicates in a unique way.

But autism is a spectrum and one of the most misunderstood parts of that spectrum is nonspeaking autism.

If your child is minimally speaking or not speaking at all, it can be hard to know what that means for their development, communication, and future.

Some autistic children may benefit from significant support from a pediatric speech therapist, a pediatric occupational therapist, and other healthcare providers — especially when it comes to developing communication skills.

Unfortunately, many myths still surround nonspeaking autism.

Some assume these children can’t understand others or will never express themselves, but those ideas are outdated and untrue.

At Forte Speech & Language Therapy, we support nonspeaking autistic children using evidence-based, neurodiversity-affirming care that honors every child’s communication style.

In this article, we’ll explore what nonspeaking autism means, how it’s different from being nonverbal, and how speech therapy and AAC can help children connect, communicate, and thrive.

🧠📚 Could Your Child Have Dyslexia? Here’s What to Look For.

Dyslexia affects how the brain processes written language — and while it’s common, it’s also widely misunderstood.

If your child is struggling to read, write, or recognize letters, you may be wondering:
“What’s really going on — and how can I help?”

At Forte Speech & Language Therapy, our pediatric speech therapists help children with dyslexia build confidence and literacy through personalized, strength-based therapy.

In our latest blog, we explore:
🔍 Early signs of dyslexia in preschoolers, school-aged kids, and teens
🧩 How dyslexia is diagnosed (hint: not with a scan)
🗣️ How speech therapy helps support reading, decoding, and language skills
🧠 Why early intervention can change the game

With the right support, your child can thrive — and it starts with understanding what they need.

Dyslexia changes the way your child’s brain processes written letters.

It’s estimated to affect about 7% of people globally, with no correlation to s*x, race, or socioeconomic background.

For many parents, a diagnosis like this can feel overwhelming.

You may have a lot of fears around it.

But these fears may be related to myths and old information about dyslexia that just won’t go away.

In particular, one common myth about dyslexia is that dyslexic children are less intelligent.

This is false.

Dyslexic children are no more or less likely to be intelligent than anyone else.

However, their brains do work differently than most.

If your child has dyslexia, there’s no reason to believe they won’t live a long, happy, fulfilling life.

But they may need some extra support in developing their language and literacy skills.

A great person for this job is a qualified speech pathologist.

At Forte Speech & Language Therapy, our speech therapy services for children can help by creating custom strategies that leverage your child’s strengths and self-confidence.

But like many pediatric learning differences, early intervention is important.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the early signs of dyslexia, how it’s diagnosed, and how speech therapy can help support your child’s literacy and communication skills.

As parents, we're often told to put our children first.

But in the process of giving our all, we sometimes forget an essential truth: taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your child.

This is true for any parent, and it’s especially true when parenting an autistic child, whose needs may look different from their non-autistic peers.

The extra emotional labor, advocacy, and decision-making involved can leave caregivers exhausted, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to make space for their own well-being.

That’s why this article is just for you — the parent or caregiver of an autistic child.

Not to talk about therapy goals or strategies for your child, but to focus on you — and why self-care is not just important, but necessary.

We’ll explore what self-care really means, why it’s essential for parents of autistic children, and how to make it more achievable even when time and energy feel scarce.

Exploring your identity as a transgender woman can be a deeply validating and transformative experience.

For many trans people, the coming out journey marks the beginning of a life that finally feels aligned with who they truly are.

But that journey can also come with challenges — including a wide range of decisions about how (or if) to physically or socially transition.

What name feels right for you?

What pronouns reflect your identity?

Will you pursue medical support during your transition?

And what about your voice?

Deciding whether to pursue voice modification is deeply personal — and there’s no right or wrong answer.

Some trans women choose to work with speech therapists to help feminize their voice.

Others explore voice training on their own.

And some decide to embrace the voice they already have.

Whatever your choice, your voice is valid.

If you’re a woman, your voice is a woman’s voice — period.

That said, if you’re curious about voice modification and want to explore your options, we’re here to support you.

At Forte Speech & Language Therapy, we offer transgender voice feminization services in LA and online throughout California.

In this article, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about voice feminization for trans women — including what it involves, how it works, and what you can expect from the process.
