“The thing that makes chronic pain so awful is that it’s chronic: a grinding distress that never ends. [,,] It’s also lonely.”

Our first Article Club feature for 2025 is Jennifer Kahn’s “Chronic Pain is a Hidden Epidemic. It’s Time for a Revolution.” This piece delves into her own personal experience living with chronic pain and the promising new research and therapies that are emerging

This is definitely a longer article than our previous article club features, so our team posted a summary of it on our blog. Head to the link in our bio to read the summary, and let us know in the comments what resonated with you, what therapy you’re excited about, or even what you disagreed with! ⬇️

🌞 Summer brings longer days and sunnier skies, but for many, it can also amplify feelings of loneliness—especially for those living with chronic pain. While others are out enjoying activities, those with chronic conditions might find it harder to participate, leading to a sense of isolation.

At Flowly, we understand that loneliness isn’t just an emotional experience; it’s a bio-psycho-social one. Chronic pain can heighten feelings of loneliness, impacting not only your mind but your body and social connections as well.

Swipe to read more from our Flowly Therapist - Samantha - about how loneliness affects us on multiple levels and the importance of making the effort to have contact with other people. For an in-depth look into loneliness, check out the Flowly blog.

You’re not alone in this journey, and together, we can find ways to connect and support each other. 💙

💡Heart Rate Variability (HRV) goes beyond being just a new health indicator to track. It can be trained and improved. 💡

HRV is a great indicator of your physical and mental health because it looks at the flexibility of your autonomic nervous system. The more fluctuation (higher HRV), the better because it means the brake and accelerator in your arousal system are both functional properly and in balance.

Breathing is one method for increasing your HRV. In the simplest term, your heart follows your breathing. When you control your breathing and focusing on breathing SLOW (not necessarily deep), you are helping to shift your body into a state of flow and calm. 🧘‍♀️💙

Breathe in, breathe out, and let your breath guide you to flow.

🌟 Your thoughts, feelings, and actions affect your world. 🌟

Hear from one of our Heroes who uses Flowly regularly. She shares with us her favorite VR world, but, more importantly, she talks about how Flowly helps her re-remember that she can impact the world - both in Flowly and in her life - through her emotions and physical sensations.🌈✨

As our Hero so eloquently puts it: your breath can bring life to plant.

🌊✨ Ever felt completely absorbed in what you're doing, losing track of time and feeling totally at peace? That's the magic of flow! ✨🌊

Flow isn't a one-size-fits-all experience. It can be painting, playing music, coding, or even a simple walk in nature. But for those living with chronic pain, finding flow can be more challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. 💪💙

❕ Non-structural pain is real pain ❕

Just because non-structural pain doesn't have a physical or structural cause for its existence doesn't mean there’s no physical pain being felt 💥🌀

There are many physical conditions that are commonly associated with non-structural pain, and the severity of these conditions can range from minor inconvenience to debilitating.

And the symptoms can differ for every. single. person.

Let’s remember to be kind to everyone, as everyone is on their own unique healing journeys. 💪💙

💡Chronic Pain affects 1 in 5 Americans 💡

Did you know that millions of people live with chronic pain every day? It’s a reality for so many, yet it often goes unnoticed. This is why chronic pain is known as an “invisible illness.” 👀

💬 Chronic pain doesn’t have visible signs, making it hard for others to understand the struggle. It’s a silent battle that affects daily life, mental health, and overall well-being.

🫶 Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. Be kind, always—they might be fighting a battle you might not see. 💙
