Guan Gong (also known as Guan Yu) is the Chinese God of War. People often pray to him to seek protection against evil (whether earthly or spirit) and to seek prosperity. Is Hypnotherapy all about mind control?

Hollywood has lead many to believe that hypnosis can make you lose the control of your mind to a hypnotist. Thus, many people believe hypnosis makes you lose control, but the truth is—you’re fully aware and in charge the entire time. In fact, a hypnotherapist can not make you do something you are unwilling to do. That is part of the reason sometimes that hypnotherapy doesn't work for everyone.

Hypnotherapy helps you tap into your subconscious mind to break habits, reduce stress, and reprogram limiting beliefs. The subconscious operates under the radar of what we are actively aware. Therefore, you may not realize that you're having negative thought patterns stemming from years of negative self-talk. When you enter a state of hypnosis, you can become aware of these negative thought patterns and rewire them to your best positive outcome.

Growing up, my dreams were constantly filled with monsters chasing me through the nooks and crannies of the McDonough Homes projects. We would often engage in battles but I somehow, always end up the victor or run from each confrontation that was not winnable. As a teen, I often thought these were regular dreams every child had that taught me to deal with challenges in my waking life. Tonight, December 30th, there will be a rare celestial phenomenon occurring: a very rare Black Moon event. What is a black moon? A black moon is a second new moon in a given month. It occurs every 29 months or once every two and a half years. Why is this special to me? It is a time where there is a very strong energy to assist in new beginnings and looking into yourself. So, if you’re attuned to the energies of the moon, tonight is a good time to set your intentions on new projects or big changes in your life. It’s also a great time to meditate and to look within for wisdom and guidance for your life. If you are holding on to negative thoughts or behaviors that no longer serve you, this is a good time to decide that it’s time to let it go.

Activities to consider:
1. Journaling things you wish to let go and send them off by burning them tonight.
2. Spend some time connecting to your higher self in meditation or prayer.
3. Take a salt bath with aromatic candles or cleansing crystals to help release anything that is holding you down.

As the Lunar New Year is approaching, it is time to cast off the ills of the passing year and to welcome new, positive energy in your life. For a limited time, our temple is offering blessed power paper for those who need to cleanse their living spaces of the negative energy. The way to activate this power paper is to open the paper in the different rooms of your house on January 20th. In each room, you ask the Sifu on the power paper to take away these negative energies (tej yaam qas, yaam phem, yaam mob, yaam nkeeg, yaam tsis huv, yaam tsis ncaaj), pulling all the darkness away from your space. After repeating this process in every room of your house or apartment, you burn the paper outside and send it to heaven.

When I was 15, I went to a camp in the northwoods of central Minnesota during the summers. Surrounded by the the green hues of nature and brown tree bark, it often felt peaceful in the quieter moments of camp during the day. At night, I would feel the chill of my hairs standing on their ends but could not make sense of why I was feeling that way. Sometimes, I would be so afraid of what was before me, feeling as if it was just a few feet away. I couldn't see or hear anything but I felt the fear creep over me. Having descended from a shaman family, I often wondered if the shake in my knees meant anything more than it was. I often consulted my mother, who was a shaman. She assured me that it was nothing more than just a shake. For Hmong shamans to rise, you're supposed to endure a near death experience where you get very sick and nothing seems to help you. It's not until a shaman comes and uncovers that you have shaman guides that you start to feel better. I never got that sick so my family brushed it off as nothing.

Hmong Shamanism has changed and adapted so much since those dark days of practicing in Laos. We still have so much to learn and to document.
