Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy

Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy We have taught more than half of the professionals working in this field in North America.

The Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (AOMT) is the leading post graduate training academy for allied health professionals who want to treat orofacial myofunctional disorders. The Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (AOMT) strives to educate students and the public about Orofacial Myofuctional Disorders (OMDs) and getting health care professionals the specialised training necessary they need to treat them. We are also actively engaged in a campaign to raise the professional level of awareness of myofunctional therapy, reaching out to leaders and associations in other health care specialties including dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric medicine, speech-language pathology, and maxio-facial surgery. To this end, we have a large number of speaking engagements to leading congresses in these fields coming up in the next year in North and South America, Europe, and Australia. Please find attached below more detailed course information, a registration form, some further background on orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT), some articles we've written, and some interesting research on OMT and TMD, OMT and OSA, as well as OMT and the prevention of orthodontic relapse. The research is an example of the evidence based research we look to back every component of our course up with as well as a tool we teach allied health professionals to use to build a practice. Our lecturers, Joy Moeller, BS, RDH, and Licia Coceani-Paskay, MS, CCC-SLP, bring decades of clinical experience as well as knowledge about research and integrating Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy into practice. We are passionate about providing the best knowledge in this field and preparing students to be able to identify and treat myofunctional disorders. The course provides a solid foundation to begin a career as a Myofunctional Therapist. The course is structured so that all attendees should be able to begin treating OMDs immediately upon completion. We encourage students to identify potential patients that they may begin therapy with soon after the course. There are four main components of our program, Comprehensive Course in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy:

1. History of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) and the Etiology of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs)
2. How to identify/diagnose OMDs along with the related anatomy and pathology
3. How to treat OMDs: structured, phased exercises to treat and correct OMDs, eliminate noxious habits, and work with special needs patients (OSA, TMD, et al).
4. How to integrate and market OMT in a multi-disciplinary environment, working with ENTs, SLPs, maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, general dentists, sleep medicine doctors, pediatricians, and others. Also included in the course:
Current Evidence Based Research
Anatomy/ Physiology / Pathology of OMDs
Complete Habit Elimination Program (i.e., thumbsucking)
Comprehensive Treatment Program (exercises in a complete treatment program with reference videos to assure correct application)
Successful Marketing and Practice Building
Ongoing consulting support as you begin to see patients

To enroll, simply fill out the registration form and payment details on our website, www.aomtinfo.org. There are examples of additional recent developments that will bring greater awareness of OMT to North America.

Licia Coceani Paskay was truly one of a kind.

We are heartbroken by her passing and uplifted by the legacy she leaves behind. Licia was a cornerstone of our Academy—a brilliant teacher, a tireless seeker, and a generous friend.

This Saturday, we will gather to honor her life and contributions at our Myo Coffee Klatsch.

We invite all who knew her—through science, study, mentorship, and the shared love of learning—to join us in remembering a light that touched so many.

Her spirit lives on in each of us. We love you, Licia. We celebrate you.

Please join us.

Hello everyone, a quick update. Joy visited the site of her home in the Palisades, after waiting for a few hours to be let in by the National Guard. She was escorted up by police who let her and her family see what was left. As you can see, a pile of rubble. Hard to think we were all together here last weekend toasting to the New Year, walking into Temescal with the kids and the dog, and sitting at the table with the bounty of food Joy always serves. While there wasn’t much to see, one object from the home stood out: the bell on her bicycle. Maybe that’s the bell that will remind us to carry forward, let people know we are here, and signal forward motion. AND - there is the office, still standing. It’s the only building on the block that made it. While we thought it was the fickle path of fire, we learned that fire retardant was sprayed on it by the office building owner as the fire came close. Sharing these pics as the reality has now set in.

We are safe, thank you to everyone who has reached out to share concern and words of empathy and support! As many of you know, our axis was in Pacific Palisades, and it’s where our matriarch Joy Moeller lived next to the office for AOMT. While Joy lost her home, we are emboldened by the acts of courage and hope that has rallied around Los Angeles and this wonderful community. I’m so touched to hear from you all over the world as we face this devastating loss. Today we cried for the first time as we sang in the sanctuary at Wilshire Blvd Temple, and wrote cards to the courageous firefighters who are doing everything to protect and serve. These acts bring a sense of connection, so very important in these times. I want to say thank you and how much it means to know people care (pointing fingers is not helpful in this phase of loss, I’d like to add). I wanted to let you know we are here and while in shock we will persist. Thank you 🙏

✨Strength from a Legacy✨
Saturday October 26th on the Myo Coffee Klatsch
8:00AM Pacific Time//11:00AM Eastern Time//4PM London Time

This Saturday, October 26th, the Myo Coffee Klatsch will host guest author Linda Rhoades, who will share the remarkable story of Irene Newman, the world’s first dental hygienist. ‼️Irene Newman’s contributions to dental health came at a time when the world was experiencing chaos, including the challenges of global conflict and public health crises.

Newman was trained by Dr. Alfred Fones, the father of dental hygiene, in the early 1900s. In 1907, she became the first dental hygienist, dedicating her work to preventive dental care and education, revolutionizing how we understand oral health today. Her story teaches us about resilience, innovation, and the power of education and prevention in healthcare, even in the face of global unrest. Her legacy continues to inspire dental and health professionals worldwide.

Join us for this inspiring discussion with Linda Rhoades to explore the historical context of Irene Newman’s life and the profound impact she made in a turbulent world.

**Please message me your email if you would like to join and I’ll send the Zoom link. **

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, let’s celebrate the accomplishments of professionals in our field with an empowered discussion around advancing health— and dental hygienists— for the benefit of all.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to message me below!
