As a yoga teacher, this is one of those asanas that seems to inspire despair in my students! Over and over again I hear that they can barely move forward when using the correct form in this pose.
It is very important to protect the back here, so the legs should be firming in and the belly should be engaged. There should be no strain or reaching with the neck or chin, just a simple hinge at the hips. However, when my students are doing all of these things to protect their back, it ends up limiting their range of motion and that can be disheartening.
Remember, yoga is YOUR practice, so if you are feeling a stretch and you are doing the work then that is all you need to worry about! Think of your mat as your own private, little, island where you get to do exactly what feels good to you that particular day.
Isn't that amazing?
As you move into your practice today let go of all judgments and expectations, close your eyes and notice what you feel in your own body. Zero comparisons, zero judgment!
