Strides in Recovery is a Los Angeles based nonprofit which brings the healing power of goal-oriented group running/walking to clients in addiction treatment programs. As a volunteer coach of a residential addicition recovery program's LA Marathon team, I have the honor and privilege of helping people experience the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritutal rewards of training for a major endurance event, while turning their lives around. Inspired by the many success stories, I started Strides in Recovery to help others in the recovery community harness the power of running for maintaining their sobriety.

The 2025 Community Partner Values Award goes to: Strides in Recovery 🏆

Each year, the Department of Public Health hosts its Giving Thanks event to recognize employees and community partners whose work reflects the department’s core values. It was an honor to be present for this event. ✨🤲🏽

This year Strides in Recovery was among 10 community partners who received the Inclusivity Award. This award celebrates groups that promote respect and belonging, creating spaces where people can be themselves, and bring their unique strengths to a shared mission. 💚 ☀️

“This recognition belongs to all of us. It reflects the community we’ve built together—one where every voice is valued, everyone feels welcome, and everyone has a place to contribute. Thanks to the spirit we’ve cultivated together, this award represents not just an organization, but a community living its values every day.” —Leslie Gold, Founder of Strides in Recovery

Our Story

At Strides in Recovery, we believe that training toward a challenging goal with the support of a community is a metaphor for recovery, and for life.

Inspired by the many success stories she heard while coaching a Los Angeles Marathon Team comprised of clients, alumni, and supporters of a residential addiction treatment facility, Beit T’Shuvah, Leslie Gold started Strides in Recovery in order to bring the same life changing experiences to other recovery communities.

Strides in Recovery teams welcome everyone, regardless of level of fitness or prior athletic experience. Teams are open to anyone who wants to make a difference, for their own recovery or for others who are working hard to overcome substance use disorders. We are supportive, non-competitive communities, training together to enjoy the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits of running. We prove to ourselves that we can achieve whatever we set our minds to; we celebrate successes along the way; we become part of something bigger than ourselves.

Addiction is a disease that destroys lives. You can be part of the solution. Come join us!
