Allowing a child to use a knife may seem scary to some, but there is a reason behind the importance of it. Properly using a knife contributes to the development of fine motor skills, as well as a love of cooking and being in the kitchen. That said, there are a progression of knives that can be introduced at different developmental ages to help the child properly use a knife. In the Montessori and Waldorf education philosophies, they actively promote that the child independently work around the home. For example, part of kindergarten readiness is being able to use a scissor properly. It is important to provide opportunities to be able to use fine motor skills such as digging, manipulating play doh, cutting, beading, etc.

The picture above shows the progression of knives to use with your child starting when they are a toddler. All children are different but I will give a general guideline of ages to use with the knives:

1. Between 18 and 30 months
2. Between 2.5-3.5 years old
3. Between 3.5-5.5 years old plastic knife
4. Between 6 -7 years old opinel knife
5. 7+ years old is the last knife

We want to teach our child that they have to eat lots of different foods to help their body child grow. This can feel really challenging when your child is only eating one food item on their plate and resisting your efforts to encourage them to eat or even try other foods. But hope is not lost and it’s important we stay consistent in our messaging and our efforts. When feeling frustrated with your cautious eater, it is important to try and avoid saying or making negotiations such as “take one more bite of broccoli and then you can have dessert.” Instead, say: “you have to eat lots of different foods to help your body grow.” And then serve a portion of fruit with the meal.
When you phrase something like “if you eat this, then you can have that,” it is perceived as a threat to a child. They will also then view dessert as this mysterious food that somehow holds a special place in the food chain. Instead, you want to focus on the messaging that they have to eat lots of different foods to help their body child grow.

“We need to empower mothers to ask for help, not shame them.”

Even after having multiple children, no one can or should be expected to know everything. In fact, to think so is to put undue pressure on ourselves and each other as every child is different, and every experience for the mother is too. It is important we acknowledge that being vulnerable and asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of. Having the self awareness to know when we need help shows strength. Let us lead by that example and make sure to lift each other up when someone asks for help.

It takes a village to raise children, but the reality is most people don’t have a village. We are lucky to have an online village but it is not the same as a physical one. So let us use what we do have to our advantage as best we can by allowing it to be a collective resource and safe space for a community of encouragement and support.

Emotional Puberty

Emotional Puberty usually happens between 5.5 and 7 years old. Changes you will start to see in your child experiencing emotional puberty look like:

1st: Physical Changes: During this phase, your child will begin losing baby teeth and getting adult teeth. They will begin losing their baby fat, and their limbs start lengthening. They may also experience growing pains in their legs.

2nd: Emotional Changes: As your child begins to develop feelings of empathy and compassion, they may appear more sensitive than previously.
You might hear phrases from them like “Everyone is mean to me. No one likes me. You don’t love me”. Don’t take these comments too seriously because in a day or two (or even within the hour) you will likely witness your child change their perspective. As you notice these changes in emotional expression, be sure to loop your child’s teacher and any other caregivers in to what is going on and to keep that line of communication open. Keep in mind that in your child’s world, this IS their whole world, and emotions will feel very heavy. An incident with a friend might feel devastating, but then the next day, they may be best friends again. Honor their feelings while keeping in mind they likely will evolve or change relatively quickly.
3rd: Intellectual Changes. You’ll start to see differences in the way your child plays and the way they come up with ideas. You may start to see that your child takes more time to set up their play than actually play as they become the director instead of the actor. Most challenging will be how they start to test your boundaries. This is a new and different round of limit testing than the toddler years. Don’t be surprised if all the sudden they start arguing with you or outright refusing what you ask them to do, and telling you fabricated and exaggerated stories. Recognize that this is to be expected and not to cave in. Hold your boundaries with love, respect, and understanding and soon your child will be centered again. Don’t mistake their curiosity and growing intellect as a need to answer every question. There can still be a sense of wonder. Remember our parents didn’t have google!

How did I get started on nontoxic journey?

I didn’t grow up with the healthiest family; actually far from it! I would describe myself as the typical child of the ‘80s: eating gushers, fruit by the foot, squeeze its, and pizza bagel bites. In college, I thought eating Subway was being healthy. My go-to foods came from Taco Bell or Carl’s Jr. I didn’t learn anything about nutrition until graduate school. When I started studying pediatric neuropsychology and working with kids in graduate school, I began to realize the importance of diet and did a deep dive into the research. I started implementing these changes not only in my patients diets, but in my own as well. Having been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, I started to see a difference in my ability to focus and sit still. When my first was born, I prepared and started with the basics. It wasn’t until my son was hospitalized at 7 weeks old for 29 days that I started to consider evaluating all of the environmental toxins around us. Over the years I slowly started to switch things out. I started with things that I could easily accomplish like my cleaning products, my cookware, and switching to glass bottles and containers. I am constantly learning about healthier or less toxic alternatives, and then I explore ways I can make reasonable modifications or changes over time.

The next question I always get asked is: How did you get your husband on board?

Dr. Organic Mommy

First and foremost, I am a mom of three kids and two fur babies. I am married to my high school sweetheart. I have a BA in Neuroscience and Psychology from USC. I also have a Masters in public health, specializing in child and family health. I recently completed my doctorate in clinical psychology, specializing in pediatric neuropsychology. I love helping other moms with parenting and exposing children to the art of food. I am NOT a chef but I take my food and my health seriously! I love grocery shopping with the kids and I really dislike buying clothes (I live in my jeans and tee-shirts). I love sharing my knowledge of all things parenting, sleeping, eating etc.
