The Iraq War went on to kill over 100,000 civilians (at the low estimate), among other horrors. It became nearly universally agreed that this is a shameful part of American & global history. Have we forgotten this?

This is the very same person, saying the very same thing, 23 years later.

Does he address what he will do differently this time, to make it not a spectacular failure, like last time?

Hospice volunteering 🤝 4/22 —

+ Person 1 was in a common room with about 12 others, so I played for / chatted with all of them, and will do the same next week.
⠀
+ Person 2. Her pastor and church colleague were also visiting. I asked to play guitar, and they improv sang along with me in Taiwanese ! It was truly a beautiful song 🎵. And the person seemed to have a very positive response to it as the rest of us did, although she is no longer able to speak due to Parkinson’s. She used to sing and dance herself at her church.

I’d like to continue opening scenarios where I play for multiple people rather than the usual one at a time. And, to get more musicians into these places as well. (Easier said than done.)

Nursing homes are notoriously lonely and difficult places, ever more since covid. The oft-repeated words “stay away from the sick and elderly” may make some sense on some level at some times; but in any case, also feed into a more silent epidemic. “Please *visit* the sick and elderly (and your friends and family and all people)” is also extremely important, most of the time. Studies show 📚 positive social interaction is as important for health as nutrition and exercise.

Meet hero Gwendolyn Theus 💚

Gwendolyn Theus, 64, caregiver, died trying to save her charge – a 71-year-old paraplegic woman – after a fire broke out in the woman’s Delhi, Louisiana, home. Theus entered the woman’s bedroom on the opposite side of the house to alert her. As the flames intensified and spread, Theus tried to push the woman’s hospital bed through the bedroom doorway, but it did not fit. She then dragged the woman off the bed and pulled her toward a bedroom window, which she had partially opened. The woman slipped from Theus’ grasp and they both fell to the floor beneath the window. Firefighters responded and removed the women, who were by then unresponsive, through the bedroom window. The 71-year-old woman was revived and taken to a hospital.
