When we witness other people's suffering and are unable to do much about it, it can leave is with a constant emotional weight that consists of feeling powerless, anxious, and even guilty for living our normal lives with all our basic needs met. This is known as empathic distress. I know this feeling well and naturally, I’m engulfed in it too.

When experienced in prolonged periods, empathic distress and uncertainty can leave us feeling paralyzed and in a state of internal chaos. Naturally, the brain tries to bring some order and predictability in our lives by trying to control what it can in our environment. Unfortunately, sometimes this results in us trying to control things that are and will never be within our control, such as *changing* the opinion of another person or getting a favorable response from them. We cannot change another person’s opinion, but we can respectfully educate through resources or share own. This is important to remind ourselves of because it has a huge impact on our mental health and our relationships with others.

I hope this posts encourages you to be more mindful of how you're spending your mental and emotional energy right now.
