"How experienced are you with positioning during labor?”
Here’s the truth: many doula training programs offer only basic knowledge of labor positions—and even less on how to use them to actually progress labor and relieve pain.
But positioning is crucial for:
✅ Opening the pelvis
✅ Helping baby descend
✅ Shortening labor
✅ Reducing pain naturally
✅ Avoiding unnecessary interventions
All important things that we as doulas WANT for our clients, and we as moms should WANT for ourselves!
So as you interview doulas, don't be afraid to ask. Does she actually know positioning techniques to help you progress through labor? Because reality is, many don’t.
The most effective doulas are the ones who’ve gone beyond their initial training—investing in continuing education, in fetal positioning, and hands-on techniques to truly support the birthing body and mind.
As a faith-based, holistic doula, I bring both evidence-based tools and a heart rooted in the Gospel—because I believe labor can be both sacred and strategic.
Ask the hard questions. Your birth deserves the best support.
I've personally moved my clients into different positions to get baby's heart-rate to sound better when nurses were saying a csection was on the horizon, and other clients are pushing babies out within 15 minutes of a hard position change. I always ask my clients, do you want to put in the work and make it harder for shorter? Or let it stay the same and drag it out longer? -- Most moms want it over quicker, (who can blame them!) and are willing to put in the hard work of changing positions and listening to my suggestions. But I didn't learn ANY of this in my initial doula training program I did three years ago!
Experienced moms, were there any labor positions you tried in labor? If you had a doula, did she suggest any positions for you?
