Mother's Day has always been a bit complicated for me.

I wanted so badly to be a mom. For many years I hated this day because I didn't "get to" celebrate for the right reason.

Then we adopted our daughter and the day gained new meaning.

And yet there's still a part of my heart that grieves never being able to call myself a birthing caregiver. I mourn never being able to feel those first movements and complain about the baby sitting on my bladder. (And plenty of things I'm glad I didn't have to go through!)

While I love my daughter more than I ever thought possible, my heart aches for so many women who want to celebrate today and cannot.

It's not enough to include them as mom's in their heart or momsoffur babies. (It's a nice gesture for sure.)

Yet, somehow, we keep chasing this fictitious woman. She’s the mom with the spotless house, the homemade organic lunches, the perfectly balanced work-life schedule, and the patience of a saint.
