✨Resident Spotlight: Irma✨ Irma was born in 1931. She has lived in and loved the Highlands her entire life, which is one of the reasons she chose to live at the Altenheim.
Irma married George Herbert Raque. They had eight children – six boys and two girls. Irma worked at Kaelin’s Restaurant for almost her entire life. Over her 72 years at Kaelin’s, Irma performed virtually every job at the restaurant, from washing dishes to recipe and menu development to greeting customers. She owned and operated Kaelin’s until 2007, when she sold the business and retired.
Despite being fully engaged in running a thriving business, Irma was able to pursue her many interests. Irma raised orchids when the flowers were still a relative rarity outside of Hawaii. She loved to work in her garden and was extremely knowledgeable about trees native to Kentucky and perennials. She learned to ski in her 40’s and went white water rafting in her 50’s. Irma and her husband Herb sparked their children’s interest in science, the weather and especially history by taking them on educational trips to the birthplaces of presidents and to Civil War sites.
After her retirement Irma participated more fully in activities at her church, Saint Agnes, where she was an active lifetime member. She served on several committees over the years, but she most enjoyed greeting parishioners and guests before mass.
Irma continued her enthusiastic study of genealogy, including taking a trip to Switzerland to visit the birthplace of her paternal grandfather, Dr. Louis Kaelin. She became a member of Daughters of the American Revolution in 2015, having at least 5 ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. Irma is known for her enthusiastic research on the history of the Highlands and its historic homes. She accumulated an extensive collection of historical photographs of homes and street scenes in the Highlands. Irma was frequently invited to present her research and photographs at club meetings. Her research collection will be donated to the University of Louisville Archives.
