My Story
For 17 years I worked in the business world. I learned how to be stressed, effective, and always in a hurry. I lived with that classic shoulders in the ears stance and I became pretty darn good at what I did. I never chose the path I went down. It pretty much chose me. I was good at it, but I wasn’t passionate about it.
During that time, I was able to sprinkle in a few jobs that I did care about. I worked for a very short time at Caritas Peace Center and also for The Mattingly Center. These were jobs I was passionate about. At the end of the day I was tired, but not stressed. I really made a difference for people. I saw small glimpses of the good I was doing for individuals and for families. Of course, life happened and the business world became the path I thought I needed.
In 2016 my entire right arm went numb. I was having bee sting sensations all over my body and both my arms became heavy to lift. I went through a few doctors, X-rays, and MRIs to learn that my spine was centrally compressed. I was told I had a bulge at every cervical level and that one disc was now affecting my spine. Surgery was necessary because the longer nerves are compressed the greater the chance that there will be long-term nerve damage.
My surgery was flawless and my surgeon was great. However, I was never told how nerves heal. No one talked to me about nutrition or weight. Thanks to the internet I did learn that a lot of people with my surgery went on disability. I also now had the scary knowledge that these individuals had repeat surgeries one and two years out. That they had permanent nerve damage. So that, even though I wasn’t working, I still had that stressed out shoulders in the ears stance and the bee stings were coming back all over my body. The idea that I may be forever broken caused so much anxiety that my pain was returning.
