Today we celebrate the mysterious, magical, and often misunderstood black cats! ๐ŸŒ™โœจ
For centuries, these gorgeous felines have been wrapped in superstition โ€” from being seen as bad luck in a variety of macabre manners in some cultures to symbols of good fortune and protection in others.

Letโ€™s break the myths and show these beautiful cats the love they deserve. Share a photo of your black cat and celebrate their charm, mystery, and purr-fection! ๐Ÿพ

What's That? Wednesday!

This month, as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to highlight that this type of cancer can affect our beloved pets as well. Mammary cancer is unfortunately common in both dogs and cats, and early detection is crucial for successful treatment and recovery.

Just like with humans, regular checks can make a significant difference. We recommend examining your pet's body at least once a month. This can often be incorporated into a regular belly rub! (Experiences may differ with spicy kitties.๐Ÿ˜ธ)

When you're checking:
โœ” Feel for any unusual lumps, swelling, or tenderness.
โœ” Look for areas of inflammation, redness, or changes in their skin.

Additionally, please report any changes in appetite, energy, or behavior to your veterinarian.

Female animals who are not spayed before sexual maturity have an increased risk of developing mammary tumors, as these tumors are often influenced by hormones.

If you notice anything unusual, please do not hesitate to call your veterinarian or MVSES to schedule a consult.

Vet Tech Appreciation Week is halfway through, and we want to take a moment to celebrate the Licensed Veterinary Technicians and Technologists who make MVSES exceptional!

While not every LVT at Metro wanted to be pictured on social media, it is important for us to recognize the incredible talent they bring to our team. These dedicated professionals have extensive on-the-job training and have also completed veterinary technician-specific curricula at accredited institutions. Their studies include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, clinical techniques, pharmacology, anesthesiology, surgical and medical nursing, radiology, and clinical pathology.

After graduating from a veterinary technician or technologist program, they undergo rigorous testing to become licensed. Each year, they further their education and training by completing continuing education and attending veterinary conferences.

Their passion and commitment to being the best medical professionals they can be is truly inspiring, and we are incredibly grateful to have so many LVTs on our crew!

This year, the theme for Vet Tech Appreciation Week from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) is "Paths to Success: Shining a Light on Credentialed Veterinary Technician Stars."

We are certainly proud of our stars!

๐Ÿ๐ŸŽHappy Feel Good Friday! ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ

Today, we're celebrating a successful endoscopy performed this week. Piper, a 16-year-old Rat Terrier, was referred to the emergency service at MVSES for an emergency upper endoscopy with our Internist, Dr. Catherine Daley, and her team.

Piper had initially presented to another clinic the night before after choking on a piece of an apple. Radiographs confirmed the apple was lodged in her esophagus, but the previous facility was unsuccessful in moving it into her stomach.

In situations like Piper's, where an edible object is stuck in an animal's esophagus, veterinarians sometimes attempt to push the item into the pet's stomach for normal digestion. Alternatively, it can be in the pet's best interest to retrieve the item through the mouth.

For Piper, our goal was for Dr. Daley to visualize the apple with the endoscope, and then for her team to assist in passing a gastric tube to help push the apple into Piper's stomach. We are thrilled to report that the procedure was a success!

Piper recovered well and was discharged with medication to soothe her irritated throat. Chew your treats up better sweet girl!

Well done, Internal Medicine team!

Say hello to one of our incredible emergency service doctors โ€” Dr. Amanda Kaufman โ€” pictured here with her heart cat, Merlin! ๐Ÿ’œ

Dr. Kaufman completed her undergraduate degree at Morehead State University, then earned her DVM from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

She shares her home life with 4 cats, 3 dogs, 2 pigs, and a few chickens! ๐Ÿท๐Ÿฃ

Dr. Kaufman considers it a true privilege to care for pets in Louisville and the surrounding communities. She especially values the opportunity to collaborate with Metropolitanโ€™s Specialty Services to deliver gold standard medicine and compassionate care to every patient.

MVSES is so proud to have Dr. Kaufman as part of our ER team!

๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿพ Spooky Season + National Black Dog Day? Sounds like magic to us! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ–ค๐ŸŽƒ

National Black Dog Day is a perfect day to highlight the black beauties that we share our lives with!

Black dogs have long been wrapped in myths and mystery, but thereโ€™s nothing scary about these sweet pups โ€” unless youโ€™re afraid of unconditional love and wagging tails! ๐Ÿ‘ป

Did you know black dogs tend to spend more time in shelters simply because of their coat color isn't seen as bright or flashy? We find it hard to believe! ๐Ÿ˜

Today, weโ€™re casting a spell to break the โ€œblack dog syndromeโ€ and celebrate these boo-tiful companions.

๐Ÿ’ฌ If you have a black dog, weโ€™d love to see them! Comment pictures of your black dogs!

All work and no play makes for a very stressed veterinary team!

MVSES started a new tradition this fall to build an even more bonded team while enjoying a day of fun, sun, scavenger hunts, good food and more!

Dr. Graehler may even have made a s'more or two for the kids!

Of course, we couldn't enjoy a day of R&R without the hard work and dedication of the team who stayed at the hospital to keep the emergency service running while many got to go play. Thank you!
