What's That? Wednesday - IMHA
First, what is IMHA?
IMHA, Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, is a condition in which your pet's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. This is concerning because IMHA may destroy your pet's red blood cells faster than their body can replace them, potentially leading to life-threatening anemia.
IMHA can occur as a primary or secondary illness. Primary IMHA has no specifically identifiable cause, whereas secondary IMHA occurs when the condition is triggered by outside factors. Common factors are infections, parasites, the use of certain medications, cancer, or inflammatory diseases.
Regardless of the cause, you may see these standout symptoms in your pet:
Pale or white gums
Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
Weakness or collapse
Rapid breathing
Dark or reddish urine
Decreased appetite
Severe Lethargy
If your dog shows any of these symptoms immediate veterinary care is essential.
At Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service, our emergency and critical care department as well as our internal medicine team, is here to help!
IMHA requires aggressive and often intensive care. Treatment may include:
๐ฉธ Blood Transfusions to treat anemia and quickly replenish their red blood cell supply
๐ Immunosuppressive medications stop the immune system from destroying red blood cells
๐งช Anticoagulant therapy to prevent additional concerns, such as blood clots,
๐ฅ Hospitalization ensures pets receive 24/7 monitoring and supportive care
IMHA is a serious disease with variable outcomes. Even after discharge, careful monitoring and follow-up testing are essential, as relapse can occur.
The team at Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Service provides advanced emergency and specialty care, including blood transfusion services and intensive monitoring. A diagnosis of IMHA can feel overwhelming. Our veterinarians and support staff are committed to guiding you through every step โ from emergency stabilization to long-term management โ with compassion, expertise, and clear communication.
Here we have Hanna, a beautiful Standard Poodle who has been in treatment for IMHA since November 2025 with Jeff W. Smith, DVM, DACVECC and her routine care veterinarian. Hanna visits Metro regularly so we can track her red blood cell count and manage any necessary medication alterations. So far, miss Hanna is doing great!
