Testing cholesterol alone as a marker for heart health is a travesty. It’s outdated, incomplete, and dangerously misleading. Total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL are just surface-level numbers—they don’t tell the full story of what’s happening in your body. If we want to truly understand cardiovascular risk, we need to dig deeper.
ApoB is one of the most critical markers. It measures the number of LDL particles, which are the real culprits behind plaque buildup in arteries. Then there’s Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), a genetic variant of LDL that’s highly inflammatory and a significant risk factor for heart disease. And lipoprotein fractionation? It breaks LDL and HDL into subtypes, showing whether your LDL particles are small and dense (dangerous) or large and fluffy (less harmful). These tests give us the real picture. And don't forget insulin and glucose numbers, which also impact cholesterol.
And let’s not forget genetics. DNA SNPs reveal predispositions to high cholesterol, inflammation, blood sugar issues or impaired detox pathways. But here’s the truth: your genes are not your destiny. They’re just a blueprint. The choices you make—what you eat, how you move, how you manage stress—can drastically influence how those genes express themselves.
The idea that cholesterol doesn’t matter is pure BS! It’s not about cholesterol itself being the villain—it’s about how it’s transported, how it interacts with inflammation, and how your body processes it. That’s why looking at YOU as a whole—your genetics, environment, and lifestyle—is the only way to get the full picture.
I’ve helped clients who were told their cholesterol was “fine,” especially if their HDL was higher... yet their ApoB or Lp(a) was through the roof! By addressing the root causes—through personalized nutrition, movement, and lifestyle changes—we’ve turned those numbers around and improved their overall health.
Let’s stop relying on incomplete tests and outdated or simply misleading advice. Let’s look at YOU as the unique individual you are, get the right tests and create a plan that works for your body. If you’re ready to dive deeper, I’m here to help. Let’s get started.
