The words “failed” do not belong anywhere in conversation about pregnancy, birth or postpartum 🙅🏽‍♀️

We have midwives, hospitals, birth centers, OBGYN’s and MFMs for good reason! In a percentage of cases, they are all very much needed 🧑🏼‍⚕️👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏾‍⚕️ we as birth workers and families are GRATEFUL for these resources being readily available to families when they are truly needed.

The #1 cause of home birth transfers is maternal exhaustion. This is why it is essential to rest, hydrate and nourish your body during early labor. A hospital transfer from a homebirth is by no means a failure. It is the responsible, proper use of the resources that are available to keep families safe. Please don’t place this in a negative light.💜💡

Reach out if you’re needing a doula or share if you know mamas in need! Looking forward to getting back into birth work after 2 years off. 🩷

Normal variations only become problematic when we apply generalised expectations about labour patterns to individual women and babies.

Whenever you're offered a medical test, take a moment to consider what will happen with the information gained from it.

Is this something you're happy with?

Could a particular result limit your options in any way?

If a screening test shows that you are carrying group B strep bacteria, have gestational diabetes or have a higher-than-average BMI, for instance, you might be told that you can't birth where you wanted to.

What are the alternatives?

There are always alternatives, including declining the test, or seeking care elsewhere.

Always remember it's your decision. You can say 'yes' or 'no' or 'I need time to think about this.'

And although not everybody realises this, you don't have to have those screening tests in the first place if you don't want them.

If you'd like to know more, or to better understand some of the wider issues around making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth, take a look at my book, "What's Right For Me? Making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth."

It was written to help women, parents and families to better understand how modern maternity care works and how you can make the decisions that are right for you.

Let's talk about the myth of "natural induction" and how any intervention in the birth process, whether membrane sweeps, castor oil, or synthetic drugs (which will be discussed in another post), disrupt the physiological process of birth.

It's essential to recognize that birth is a beautifully orchestrated process designed by God. Interventions introduce risks and complications that most times sabotage the natural flow of labor.

A membrane sweep, also known as a cervical sweep or membrane stripping, is a manual procedure performed by a healthcare provider during a vaginal exam, where they gently separate the amniotic sac from the cervix. This action releases prostaglandins, hormones that can stimulate contractions and potentially initiate labor. Membrane sweeps can lead to harder contractions, infection, and premature rupture of membranes.

Castor Oil is often touted as a natural method to induce labor. Orally ingesting castor oil stimulates the intestines, leading to cramping and potential diarrhea. This can irritate the uterus and cause prostaglandin release, which may trigger contractions and initiate labor. This can cause dehydration, diarrhea, and fetal distress.

It's crucial to approach pregnancy and birth with reverence and trust in the God’s innate wisdom in its processes. Rather than seeking interventions for convenience or impatience, consider allowing labor to unfold naturally whenever possible (which is more than you probably think!)

Any form of induction, whether through mechanical means like membrane sweeps or ingestion of substances like castor oil, disrupts the natural onset of labor by artificially stimulating contractions or cervical changes, making it inherently non-natural.

By understanding the risks associated with inductions and interventions, we can make informed choices that prioritize the safety and well-being of mom and baby. Honor the natural rhythms of birth and embrace the journey with patience, trust, and respect for the incredible process unfolding within us.

Should have told myself this too 🤣

Should have told myself this too 🤣

Let them think you’re only 39 weeks 😉

Until people stop inserting their unsolicited opinions into my clients’ private medical decisions and projecting their own fears into the vulnerable end-of-pregnancy space, I will shamelessly promote lying about your due date.

What’s a little two week cushion when we’re talking about your privacy and peace of mind?

Gosh I just love birth quotes. Sometimes the simplest of words have so much power within them.

What’s your favorite birth quote?
