🎧 Hearing loss in children isn’t always obvious — and early signs can look different depending on a child’s age. Knowing what to watch for can help parents seek help sooner.
Here are some early signs of pediatric hearing loss by age:
0–6 Months
1️⃣ Does not startle at loud sounds — Babies typically react to sudden noises like a door slamming or a dog barking.
2️⃣ Does not turn toward voices — Most infants begin recognizing and turning toward familiar voices early on.
3️⃣ Limited cooing or babbling — Early vocal sounds are an important part of communication development.
6–12 Months
4️⃣ Not responding to their name — Babies usually begin recognizing their name around this stage.
5️⃣ Limited variety of babbling sounds — Repeating sounds like “ba,” “da,” or “ma” are common milestones.
6️⃣ Not attempting simple words — Words like “mama” or “dada” often begin to appear around this time.
1–3 Years
7️⃣ Delayed speech development — Fewer words or slower language growth compared to peers.
8️⃣ Trouble following simple directions — Difficulty understanding basic instructions.
9️⃣ Turning TV or devices up louder than usual — This may indicate difficulty hearing clearly.
✨ If you notice these signs, a hearing evaluation can help provide answers and support your child’s communication development.
